Expert Reviews

Deep garnet-purple in color and scented of crushed cherries, black and red currants plus plums with hints of dried Provence herbs, underbrush and pepper, the full-bodied 2011 The Yilgarn Rouge has plenty of expressive red and black fruit flavors framed by medium to firm levels of velvety tannins and a long, earthy finish. Drink it now to 2019+.

Medium to full red purple.

Aroma

A rich and powerful bouquet with layers of complexity. The aroma is laced with blue and black berry fruits, charred cedar, ripe fig and fine subtle spices.

Palate

Full bodied, and richly flavoured, cool climate elegance at its finest. The palate is defined by generous ripe fruit, perfectly balanced with seasoned sweet oak. Cassis, vanilla, dark plum, vanilla and toast, enhanced with natural acidity to maintain structure. Fine silky tannins complement the finish.

Winery Profile

The Smithbrook vineyard is located amongst majestic “tall trees” on a pristine hill in the Pemberton wine region in the south west corner of Western Australia.

Planted in the late 1980s, the vineyard represents the most significant mature vineyard in the region. The warm Indian Ocean to the West and the cool Southern Ocean to the south create a maritime climate.

Smithbrook focuses on two key varietals - Sauvignon Blanc and Merlot, identified as the best varieties for this region.

Smithbrook has a natural, sustainable approach to managing the vineyard; low-yielding dry grown vines, roaming Guinea Fowl to control insects and no harmful sprays all assist to grow balanced vines. Vineyard philosophy employed includes rigorous programme of heavy pruning, minimal irrigation and low cropping in order to increase the fruit quality of the vineyard.
