Matua Marl Chardonnay 2015 (6 x750mL) Marlborough, NZ

Description:

The fruit for this wine was harvested in cool conditions to ensure it arrived at the winery in pristine condition. We lightly pressed the grapes to tank, leaving the juice to cold settle for 48 hours. During fermentation, we made sure some of the light fluffy lees were included to develop complexity in the wine. Afterward, the wine was matured in a mix of tank and barrel before being blended and finding its way into bottle for you to enjoy!

This fruit driven style Chardonnay is best enjoyed in the first 2 years after bottling while its fresh citrus flavours are at the fore.

Winery Tasting Notes

Notes Image

We were chuffed with the Chardonnay vintage out of Marlborough this year –cool, breezy weather made for delicate and refined flavour development with zesty cool-climate freshness once again! This wine is refreshingly vibrant with mouth-watering aromas of grapefruit and citrus. The palate is concentrated and deliciously fruity, framed by a touch of toasty brioche from French oak. With a moreish burst of freshness in the finish – you’ll be left wanting more!

Enjoy with a classic roast chicken or pork served with coleslaw – don’t hold the crackling.

Winery Profile

The Founders

As a small, family-run winery in West Auckland, Matua Vally quickly gained a reputation for innovation, award-winning New Zealand wines.

In 1974, two brothers, Bill and Ross Spence, began their dream of making wine finer than any of their contemporaries could imagine. While they were the sons of a winemaking father, theirs was a winemaking tradition in the old style, one that neither was inclined to follow. They wanted to make wine in New Zealand that was as good as any in the world.

The Name

The name Matua (mah-too-ah) in Maori means "main stem", "foremost" or "head of the family". A very appropriate title, as this is the winery credited with producing New Zealand's first Sauvignon Blanc.

A less publicised triumph was the impression the Sauvignon Blanc had made amongst the other winemakers, leading to the decision to include large quantities of this variety in the first vineyards to be planted in the now famous Marlborough region.
