Matua Single Vineyard Merlot 2013 (6 x750mL) Hawke's Bay, NZ

Description:

From our Matheson Vineyard in the Red Metals triangle of Hawke’s Bay, in one of the best vintages of the last

decade. Following a hot, dry growing season, all vineyard blocks were picked on ripeness and flavour intensity. The Icon Merlot and Malbec blocks were carefully crop thinned (to maximise flavour and concentration) to only 1 or 2 bunches per shoot. The grapes were selective-harvested, which gently destems the fruit, with a large component of whole berries, into bins. These bins were then transferred into French Oak Cuvees for fermentation. The base wines underwent post fermentation maceration for 5 days to promote tannin evolution and integration. Barrels were selected to enhance the fruit, texture and structure of each varietal. The

final blend showcases the best of each varietal and how both Merlot and Malbec complement each other so well.

Winery Tasting Notes

Notes Image

This Single Vineyard wine has a dark brooding character. Sweet fruit of blackberry, dark plum and blueberry adorn the nose, while traces of cocoa bean, vanilla and cumin linger on a dense, fleshy palate. rich, weighty and definitely not For the faint hearted.

Winery Profile

The Founders

As a small, family-run winery in West Auckland, Matua Vally quickly gained a reputation for innovation, award-winning New Zealand wines.

In 1974, two brothers, Bill and Ross Spence, began their dream of making wine finer than any of their contemporaries could imagine. While they were the sons of a winemaking father, theirs was a winemaking tradition in the old style, one that neither was inclined to follow. They wanted to make wine in New Zealand that was as good as any in the world.

The Name

The name Matua (mah-too-ah) in Maori means "main stem", "foremost" or "head of the family". A very appropriate title, as this is the winery credited with producing New Zealand's first Sauvignon Blanc.

A less publicised triumph was the impression the Sauvignon Blanc had made amongst the other winemakers, leading to the decision to include large quantities of this variety in the first vineyards to be planted in the now famous Marlborough region.
