Facing a heavily challenged season shaped by Cyclone Gabrielle, Te Mata’s rigorous vineyard selection yielded an extraordinarily precise, perfume-driven, and classical expression.

Colour: Deep, bright royal crimson with an energetic purple edge.

Aroma: An immensely expressive, lifted bouquet bursting with bell-clear cassis, wild raspberry, and dark plum. Complex layers of lead pencil shavings, nori, crushed shells, tobacco leaf, and fresh roses build remarkable detail.

Palate: Medium-bodied, seamless, and driven by incredible fruit focus. A vibrant core of dark bramble berries and savory umami notes is expertly balanced by a fine, chalky tannin profile and perfectly pitched freshness.

Finish: Exceptionally long and structured, tapering gracefully into lingering trails of raw cocoa, graphite, and dried florals.

Deep and bright, bold purple-red colour; fabulous cranberry, violet and cassis aromas, the fruit bursting from the glass. The same flavours saturate the palate which is beautifuly balanced by abundant fine-grained tannins that run the full length of the palate and provide a very long lasting and resonant farewell. Oak is so well handled as to be only just perceptible, adding to the cedary touches. An utterly delicious cabernet blend and a top vintage of this wine. - Huon Hooke, 15 February 2026.

Appearance

Regal, deep magenta-crimson with remarkable depth and a youthful purple edge.

Aroma

Cassis, dark plum and wild raspberry lead into violet, tobacco, graphite, espresso and a subtle coastal savoury note. Complex without being showy.

Palate

This is Te Mata at its most serious—powerful yet incredibly composed. Concentrated blackcurrant and dark berries are wrapped in silky, chalky tannins, with cedar, liquorice, spice and a touch of smoky umami adding depth. The finish just keeps going. A genuine collector’s Cabernet blend, and the wooden box presentation makes it feel every bit the special-occasion bottle.

Winery Profile

Te Mata Estate is New Zealand’s oldest winery, dating from the early 1890s. It is a New Zealand family-owned winery – a true estate, specialising in grape growing and winemaking from its nine Hawke’s Bay vineyards. It is acknowledged as one of only five icon wineries in New Zealand.

Under the direction of John Buck, Te Mata Estate has, over nearly thirty years, produced a stunning array of red and white wines including famous labels such as Coleraine, Awatea cabernets/merlots, Bullnose syrah, Elston chardonnay, Cape Crest sauvignon blanc and, launched in 2009, Zara viognier. Te Mata Estate has also developed a unique single vineyard from which it produces its Woodthorpe wines.

Te Mata Estate makes wines from hand-harvested grapes from its own vineyards. These vineyards are all located in Hawkes Bay (within 40 minutes drive of the winery) and under the direct control of Te Mata Estate’s viticultural team.
