Description:

WINEMAKING

The fruit was selected from premium Adelaide Hills vineyards, cool fermented on skins then pressed into stainless steel to optimise colour and flavour. The wine underwent malolactic fermentation and matured on light French oak to add length and spice, a small amount of shiraz and merlot were blended to enhance the cherry characteristic and add roundness on the back palate.

VINTAGE

The 2020 vintage in the Adelaide Hills is one for the history books, up to 30% of the region was fire affected in the December, however the wines which were able to be produced will be remembered for their excellent quality. The summer experienced several heat spikes however the wine canopies remained undamaged, fully protecting the grapes as they ripened. Welcome rains in late January and into February were instrumental in creating perfect ripening conditions for crisp whites and stunning reds.

Winery Profile

After nearly three decades of growing grapes for some of Australia’s best known wine brands, the Zilzie winery was built in 1999 with the first vintage released under the Zilzie name in 2000.

The increasingly popular and distinctive Selection 23 range was introduced in 2004, while 2008 saw the re-release of our Bulloak range.

2009 has seen the culmination of many years dedication to selective vineyard sourcing deliver the “REGIONAL COLLECTION” of Zilzie wines. We’ve combed Australia’s best known wine regions, specifically targeting the varieties they excel at, for exceptional grape parcels to produce these wines.

We’ve come a long way in 10 years, with our winery tripling in capacity, and our range growing from the humble beginnings of four varieties, to now include consumer favourites such as Pinot Grigio, Moscato and Rosé.

It’s not all about size, Zilzie is also recognised for its exceptional quality, having won 27 trophies in its short history and is the only winery from our region rated 4.5 stars by James Halliday in his 2009 Wine Companion.
