Wine Summary Image

A rare, Chardonnay-dominant (61%) masterpiece shaped by extreme weather and low yields.

It reconciles opulence with mineral tension, offering aromas of petrichor and jasmine, paired with a rich, textured palate of candied citrus, grilled lemon, and smoky reduction.

2017 - a dry and contrasted year

2017 has known three sequences, three opposite directions which are the foundations of this vintage’s character in tension. In the vineyard, the year began in a mild way. At the beginning of spring, in March, quietness was broken by 12 frost days, which led to a reduction in the potential yield. The rest of spring and the beginning of summer were hot and dry, which consolidated precocious maturation, and was propitious to sugar concentration in the remaining grapes. The rainfalls at the end of August changed the situation. Similarly to 2005 and 2010, the cropping strategy and the ability to sort out the grapes were essential to save the best fruit. The harvested chardonnays were the ripest since 2000. When uninfected, the pinots noirs showed a very beautiful balance between maturity and freshness.

Shaped by contrasts

Due to its birth under tension, there is an intrinsic component of mystery to Dom Pérignon Vintage 2017, a complexity, a duality, like a dive into the eye of an energy storm. Between opulence and edge, between roundness and straightness, it reconciles contraries. It has mineral tension, a signature so iconic for Dom Pérignon. Yet also the generosity of unheard-of maturities, in a tamed and channeled way though. Its movement is pulsating, whirling, like a substance escaping gravity.

Animated all along, it finds its final on candied yellow citrus skin. It springs up and bounces, like lightning, yet with the seduction of a moving smoothness.

Expert Reviews

97 Pts - Antonio Galloni Vinous.com

“The 2017 Dom Pérignon is so impressive. A sort of mini-2002, the 2017 is a Champagne of textural richness and resonance above all else. Its creamy, voluptuous contours are so inviting. Production for the 2017 is tiny, about a three-month supply, so this wine will come and go pretty quickly. That represents a fairly dramatic shift in philosophy at Dom Pérignon. In the past, a wine like the 2017 would not have been commercially viable because of its small volume. Today, Chef de Caves Vincent Chaperon prefers to bottle Dom Pérignon in every vintage, if possible, as a document of the year, even if that means some releases will be very small. The 2017 is a wild, exotic Dom Pérignon. I loved it.” - April 2025

94-96Pts - Essi Avellan MW EssiAvellan.com

“In 2017, pressure was on Chef de Cave Richard Geoffroy, who had decided not to produce the 2016 vintage for Dom Pérignon. Late August rainy weather destroyed the promising harvest year, and grapes needed to be collected rapidly under deteriorating conditions. Even with Dom Pérignon’s enviable sourcing and options for selection, 2017 ended up being the smallest harvest to date, worth a mere three months’ sales. Chardonnay, a big part from Chouilly. dominates this Dom Pérignon with its 62% share. In the remaining 38% Pinot Noir part, Bouzy rather unusually represents the biggest share. The nose opens beautifully with an inviting toasty and smoky twist over a ripe stone fruit profile. Laudably clean, with no signs of botrytis tones. The palate is held together by invigorating acidity and a bite of phenolics at the finish. Sensually textured and alluring, this is a Dom Pérignon that is ready to charm, with a somewhat shorter lifespan expected than for its most monumental iterations.” - Oct 2025
