Description

180 MILLION YEAR OLD CYMBITES AMMONITE FOSSIL GRAVEYARD (LOWER JURASSIC PERIOD)

  • This finely-preserved unique ammonite graveyard fossil, dated to the Lower Jurassic Period, includes a large cluster of ammonite specimens on an irregular matrix.
  • These particular ammonites are believed to be Cymbites.
  • Cymbites is a smooth subspherical dwarf ammonite from the lower Jurassic with a deep narrow umbilicus and contracted body chamber, included in the Cymbitidae, a family within the Psiloceratoidea.
  • Pieces such as this are rarely found outside of museums.
  • Ammonites are extinct spiral shelled cephalopods.
  • Ammonites are excellent index fossils, and linking the rock layer in which a particular species or genus is found to specific geologic time periods is often possible.
  • Their fossil shells usually take the form of planispirals, although some helically spiralled and nonspiraled forms (known as heteromorphs) have been found.
  • The name ``ammonite``, from which the scientific term is derived, was inspired by the spiral shape of their fossilized shells, which somewhat resemble tightly coiled rams` horns.
  • Pliny the Elder (d. 79 AD near Pompeii) called fossils of these animals ammonise cornua (``horns of Ammon``) because the Egyptian god Ammon (Amun) was typically depicted wearing rams` horns.
  • Dated to circa. 180 Million Years Before Present (Lower Jurassic Period) (Toarcian Stage).
  • The Toarcian is, in the ICS` geologic timescale, an age and stage in the Early or Lower Jurassic.
  • The Toarcian Age began with the Toarcian Oceanic Anoxic Event, a major anoxic event associated with marine extinctions and increased global temperatures that sets its fossil faunas apart from the previous Pliensbachian age.
  • It is believed to have ended with a global cooling event known as the Comptum Cooling Event.
  • Size: 180mm x 140mm x 35mm
  • Approx. Weight: 915g

Provenance:

  • Discovered in Whitby, Yorkshire, England.
  • Held in a private collection in Lincolnshire, UK.
  • Condition: This piece is extremely well preserved and remains in excellent condition - refer images.
