Provenance and collectibility — A 2014 example from the earliest chapter of the Sky-Dweller story, launched in 2012 as the most mechanically complex watch Rolex had ever put into series production and offered in precious metal only for its first five years. The gold-on-leather configuration was retired from the catalogue well before the 2023 generational refresh to the 336-series, placing this reference firmly in the discontinued column and steadily consolidating its position with collectors who want the original Calibre 9001 execution.

Design and dial — The silver sunray dial is the most restrained and arguably the most classical face offered on a gold Sky-Dweller, its brushed radial finish shifting from near-white to soft graphite as light moves across it. Applied 18k yellow gold Roman numerals give the dial a dress-watch formality that the fluted Ring Command bezel echoes, while the twelve discreet month apertures sit at the hour markers without disturbing the symmetry. Paired with the alligator strap rather than a bracelet, the watch reads considerably more understated than its 42 mm gold case would suggest.

Movement — Calibre 9001 is a 40-jewel, 380-component automatic running at 28,800 vph with approximately 72 hours of reserve. Its patented Saros annual calendar distinguishes 30- and 31-day months automatically and requires a single correction each year at the end of February, and the Ring Command bezel — a genuine departure for a manufacture built on restraint — selects between date, reference time and local time settings, turning a complicated watch into one that can be operated without a manual.

Condition — Graded Excellent. The case retains crisp lines and strong definition across the lugs and bezel flutes, with no significant marks to the gold and the dial, hands and Cyclops presenting clean throughout. Movement running to specification with all calendar and dual-time functions operating correctly via the Ring Command bezel.

Inclusions positioning — Supplied as a full set: original Rolex presentation box and papers, accompanied by a separate certificate of authenticity. For a twelve-year-old precious metal reference, complete documentation is the exception rather than the rule and materially supports both resale liquidity and the price achieved.
