Winery Tasting Notes

This tasting started with an attempt to open an eight year old Eden Valley Shiraz with a cork. “Whats that funny metal thing” said the four year old grandson, eyeing off the corkscrew, after we finally found one. So we put the cork back in three times and with mechanical aptitude so typical of his generation, he became an expert.

“So what does the cork smell like?’” I asked.

“Nothing “ he replied. “That’s really good”, quoth I.

So it is with the screw cap on our Pinot Noir. It smells of nothing, allowing the ripe dark cherry fruit notes to come freewheeling through the nostrils. The rich undertones took me back to the cherries on a Sacha Torte in a small café on Vienna’s Kartner-ring.

The palate is seriously sweet fruit dominant, but it has no analytical slight of hand; it is dry.

The plush sweet fruit sits over a mixed spice medley, with a complex tannin lingering on the finish that cries out “Food me, food me!!”

Not enjoying this wine would be a serious challenge.

Domain Day is a unique vineyard situated on a carefully selected site at Mt Crawford, high in the hills at the south eastern extremity of the Barossa Valley. Its altitude of 450 metres and the mix of unusual varieties make it one of the coolest and most interesting vineyards in the Barossa.

Winemaker Robin Day is an industry veteran with almost 80 vintages under his belt over 40 years of winemaking in 12 different countries. His global knowledge and experience has determined the varieties that have been planted for differing reasons. We have several new varieties to Australia that he has worked with internationally (Garganega, Lagrein, Saperavi, Nebbiolo), as well as the more mainstream varieties he has enjoyed

working with throughout most of his career (Riesling, Viognier, Merlot).

Domain Day has been established using state-of-the-art vineyard design protocols based on soil assessment and analysis to give a 'micro-terroir' approach within the broader ambit of the vineyard.
