Wine Summary Image

This wine is very inviting to smell, with aromas of fresh licorice, blueberry conserve and spices (clove, black pepper, nutmeg).

Full bodied but with excellent balance and a dry, firm finish.

A slightly drier, more elegant wine than the 2013.

Expert Reviews

Rating 96 - Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Advocate #211, Feb 2014

Medium to deep garnet-purple in color, the 2012 Reserve Shiraz reveals intense notes of crushed blackberries and black cherries with underlying wild blueberry, aniseed, chocolate box and Szechuan pepper hints. With a wonderful vibrancy to the fruit in the full-bodied and concentrated mouth, it displays a harmonious interplay of firm, rounded tannins and well-balanced acidity before finishing long. Drink it now to 2024+.

Winery Tasting Notes

Notes Image

The first release under screw cap.

Nice deep colour, with a healthy purple hue.

Interesting and attractive nose, with sweet blackberries and molasses, along with complex notes of undergrowth. Opens further with air/time in the glass.

Full bodied, the tannins now starting to soften, providing a more rounded mouth feel.

Long, even finish, with no sharp edges. Poised and refined, perhaps a little like 2006 in style.

Has the balance and structure to age gracefully.

Optimum drinking time: now to 2025++

Winery Profile

Noon Winery is a small family-owned business mainly specialising in full-bodied reds from McLaren Vale and Langhorne Creek. Its Reserve Shiraz had achieved very high ratings from Robert M Parker. Noon Winery does not produce any white wines though they do make a dry Rose.Drew Noon is one of the only 18 people in Australia to become a Master of Wine - which he undertook in order to learn more about the wines of the world and winemaking. Noon loves what he does: he relishes the personal effort, along with that of family and friends, at every stage of the production process. Increased production is not an aim, for the sake of ensuring ongoing quality.Noon is a small-batch maker with 5.7 hectares of estate vineyard: 4.2 hectares of bush vine grenache planted in 1934 and 1943 and 1.5 hectares of mainly graciano planted in 1999. Noon maintains the relationship with the Borrett family of Langhorne Creek established by his father in the 1960s, sourcing grapes from their 1.6-hectare "20 Rows" shiraz block (planted in 1962) and the 1.2-hectare "Fruit Trees" cabernet block (1972).

Heady, exaggerated style in some ways, but balanced and low-oaked in others. Warm alcohol is however ever-present. Dark, syrupy cherries, earth, and dried spice with a briny edge. Fine tannin has melted into the wine's warm heart, Satisfying length. A nod to elegance.
