Expert Reviews

The proprietary blend of 50% Shiraz, 34% Grenache, and 16% Mourvedre, the 2003 Olive Hill is a deep ruby/purple-tinged offering with a sweet perfume of raspberries, cherries, plums, Allspice, new saddle leather, and toasty oak. Super-ripe, concentrated, and strikingly elegant with marvelous equilibrium, it can be drunk now or cellared for 6-8 years.

Readers should not confuse Burge Family Winemakers (one of Australia’s finest wineries) with the much larger firm of Grant Burge. Burge Family Winemakers’ old vine estate-bottled offerings, made by the modest, but enormously talented Rick Burge, are classic Barossa wines with extraordinary elegance as well as complex aromatics that combine European subtlety with Australian power. - The Wine Advocate

Winery Tasting Notes

Notes Image

The blend is composed of 50% Shiraz, 34% Grenache and 16% Mourvedre. The grapes have been grown on limestone rich soils and matured in French oak. Very deep crimson colour with deep crimson hue. Perfumed nose of raspberry, violets, spice and cedar. Raspberry, liquorice, black pepper and spice flavours are on the palate and supported by dry chalky tannins, which are persistent.

Winery Profile

Brand Profile Image

The Top 8th Winery in Australia as rated by Robert Parker.

The Burge Family Winemaking tradition first started in the late 1860s with John Burge, who migrated to South Australia from Wiltshire (UK) in 1855. By the turn of the century production ceased and all equipment was sold by John’s son Meshach, and it wasn’t until 1928 that John’s grandson ‘Percival’ recommenced winemaking. Times were tough and about to get worse with falling grape prices and an impending depression.

With determination and a growing reputation for the quality of his wine, Percival’s business steadily grew and in 1950 he was joined in the winemaking responsibilities by his son Noel Burge, being one of Australia’s first qualified winemakers by graduating from the first intake of Roseworthy Oenology students in 1938.

In 1986, Noel was joined in-turn by his son Richard (Rick) who, having purchased the shareholding off other family members, immediately set about revitalising the family firm.

Success soon followed, by way of not only wine show trophies and gold medals, but also, more importantly, a steadily increasing band of satisfied customers who would purchase all of the output direct from Rick Burge’s stylish cellar-door at Lyndoch.

Whenever you buy wine there is an inherent risk, as wine is a perishable good regardless of whether it is sealed under cork or screwcap. At GraysOnline we minimise the risk to you by providing as much information as possible regarding the provenance of the wine we sell.

We take the time to individually inspect each bottle and photograph it so you know exactly what you are buying. All Private Cellar wine stored at GraysOnline is kept in a temperature controlled wine storage area. Any wine that doesn’t meet our quality standards will not be sold.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★

Wines displaying a 5 star designation are recognised as being of proven quality provenance, our team has verified that the wine has been stored correctly from original purchase straight from the winery, documentation, where possible, has been sighted and cellaring conditions have been inspected. This wine generally comes from only the best and most respected of wine collectors in Australia.

★ ★ ★ ★

Wines displaying a 4 star designation have been cellared correctly as verified by the current owners. In general these wines have been purchased from retailers or traders and stored in cellared conditions from original purchase.

★ ★ ★

Wines displaying a 3 star designation are in good condition when we inspect and we are able to confirm some cellaring conditions but we are unable to verify all ownership and storage conditions of their history.

A wine displaying no stars doesn’t mean that there is a problem with the wine, it simply means that we have been unable to verify provenance, however a quality image is always available for the purchaser to make their own purchasing decisions.

Private Cellar wine is wine which has been stored for aging purposes in a Private Cellar.

Storing the wine and allowing it to age has the potential to improve the quality of the wine. While wine is perishable and capable of deteriorating, storing the wine can alter the aroma, colour, mouthfeel and taste of the wine in a way that may be more pleasing to the taster.
