THE FRUIT

Grant Burge’s Filsell vineyard with near century old vines is considered one of the best vineyards in the Barossa Valley and consistently produces fruit of great intensity and concentration. Planted in 1920, this vineyard also produces some of the fruit for Grant Burge Wines, flagship Shiraz, the highly acclaimed Meshach. Filsell is known to loyal followers as Meshach’s younger brother. The majority of the fruit for Filsell Shiraz comes from the vineyard of the same name.

The 2014 vintage in the Barossa was interesting in that winter was generally cool with rainfall slightly above average. There was good sub-surface moisture leading up to budburst. After a short heatwave in January, followed by heavy rain in February, the remainder of the season was mild and dry, allowing picking to take place at optimal flavour ripeness. The 2014 season produced grapes with more manageable sugar levels than previous years, resulting in fruit driven full flavoured wines with moderate alcohol.

THE WINEMAKING

Different batches of fruit were crushed and fermented separately. Primary fermentation on skins occurred for approximately eight days, with a couple of small batches undergoing natural yeast fermentation in small open fermenters for a further week. The wine was pumped over three times a day and the skins were pressed gently before the free run and pressed wine was transferred to oak to finish fermentation. The wine was matured in a combination of new (30%), one, two and three year old (70%), French (46%) and American (54%) oak for 20 months.

Expert Reviews

The vines are approaching 100yo, and the wine clearly reflects the quality of the grapes, picked when ripe but not overripe. Blackberry and plum provide the heart of the wine, other inputs from chocolate and oak neatly buttressed by ripe, but firm, tannins. - James Halliday

Winery Tasting Notes

Notes Image

The 2014 Filsell Shiraz is a rich, luscious and thoroughly decadent Old Vine Shiraz that perfectly embodies this classically powerful Barossan style. Dark ruby red in colour with hints of purple, the nose is a symphony of dark forest berries, couverture chocolate, fresh blood plums and vanilla bean with hints of dark roasted coffee, earthy spices and cherry liqueur. The palate is silky soft yet incredibly dense and richly flavoured with sweet raspberry and black cherry fruit flavours, warm chocolate lava cake and sweet Chai spices, with an undercurrent of savoury toast and earthy characters. The palate, while unashamedly rich and powerful, has length and structure imparted by a foundation of ripe, supple tannins that carry the wine through to a long, lingering finish; where the flavours persist long after the wine is consumed.

An exceptional addition to the proud lineage of Filsell Shiraz that will delight on release and age gracefully for 15 to 20 years.

History and Tradition

Grant Burge is a fifth-generation Barossa Vigneron. Throughout his career, Grant has been one of the most respected and innovative forces in the Australian wine industry. The history of the Burge family and their long association with winemaking in the region can be traced back to March 1855, when noted tailor John Burge immigrated to the Barossa from Hillcot, near Pewsey in Wiltshire, England with his wife Eliza and their two sons. With help from his sons Meshach and Henry, John’s farm flourished with wheat, sheep and viticulture. His eldest son Meshach continued the farming tradition and was a prominent community leader. He married Emma in the early 1900s and they had eight children. First-born Percival established the Wilsford Winery in 1916, beginning the Burge winemaking tradition. Percival had two sons, Noel and Colin, and Colin and his wife Nancy had one son, Grant. Following in the footsteps of his father and forefathers before him, Grant now carries the winemaking tradition into the 21st century

Family Owned

Grant Burge Wines was formed in 1988 by Grant and his wife Helen, and is located in the heart of the Barossa Valley on the banks of Jacob's Creek and is still proudly family owned. Continuing the family tradition, Grant and Helen have now brought the sixth generation into the fold. Eldest son Toby is the company’s Vineyard Manager, upholding the premium quality and consistency of fruit produced from the vineyards. Amelia joined the Marketing Department in an assistant role early in 2007, and in late 2008 went out into the world to gain more experience to bring back to the company later on in her career. Trent, the youngest, has been part of the hardworking cellar team at the Illaparra Winery since vintage 2006. All three children share Grant and Helen’s vision to continue this long family tradition of bringing exceptional wines to the world.

“I am a romantic, and I have a real sense of my family history, of my father and grandfather, and what they achieved.” Grant Burge
