The ultimate pleasure experience in Champagne

Krug Grande Cuvée is the archetype of Krug’s philosophy of craftsmanship and savoir faire: A blend of around 120 wines from ten or more different vintages, some of which may reach 15 years of age. Blending so many vintages gives Krug Grande Cuvée its unique fullness of flavours and aromas, its incredible generosity and its absolute elegance - something impossible to express with the wines of just a single year. Its exceptional finesse is the result of a stay of at least another six years in the cellars. Over twenty years are needed to craft each bottle of Krug Grande Cuvée: the first prestige cuvée re-created each year, beyond the very notion of vintage.

Expert Reviews

Krug leads off where most other champagne houses end, and this is every bit a prestige cuvée. Krug is adamant that it has no hierarchy in its cuvées, but price and style dictate that Grande Cuvée is always the starting point. Interestingly, the house now pours in reverse order, tasting Grand Cuvée last. “My father said, ‘Red carpet for every Krug!’” explained Olivier. “There is no special treatment here and every grape at Krug is given the same respect. Krug’s winemaking team describes Grande Cuvée as its most exciting and most challenging wine to produce each year. It is a blend of the three champagne varieties, but there is no formula or recipe except to maintainbthe consistency of the style. The Krug Grande Cuvée and Rosé styles are built on

a high proportion (30-50%) and wide spectrum (6-10 vintages) of reserve wines. Reserves are kept in tank for five, ten and even twenty years. After blending, Grande Cuvée spends at least a further six years on lees in bottle to build its characteristic nutty flavours. It accounts for 85% of the production of the house.

Definitive and immovable, every bottle of Grande Cuvée I have tasted this year has been identical: decadently rich, extravagantly complex and thunderingly expansive. Smouldering truffle, fig, preserved citrus, dried fruits, exotic spice, butterscotch, brioche and Christmas spice all join the maelstrom but at every moment upholding

wonderful poise of lemon zest freshness and deep wells of scintillating minerality.

A vinous wine of multifaceted personality and yet profound focus, Grande Cuvée is every bit as enchanting as its legendary reputation promises. Be careful not to serve it too cold, as an entire universe of captivating theatrics unfolds as it warms. Don’t miss the spectacle.

Rating 97 - Tyson Stelzer, The Champagne Guide 2012 - 2013.

Winery Profile

Small but important Champagne house founded in Rheims in 1843 by Johann-Joseph Krug, who was born in Mainz, Germany, in 1800. By 1893 the firm occupied its current modest cellars, around whose courtyard the Krug family still live. Krug does not make an ordinary non-vintage champagne but specializes exclusively in prestige cuvées, of which the multi-vintage Grande Cuvée is the flagship. Consistently producing champagne that is among the most admired in its region of origin, Krug is the only house to persist in barrel fermentation of its entire production of base wine, in old 205-l/54-gal casks. Wines from at least six and sometimes nine different vintages make up the blend for Grande Cuvée, one of the most distinctive and long lived of champagnes. Grande Cuvée, with new packaging and a special bottle, succeeded the rather fuller-bodied Private Cuvée as Krug's most important product in 1979. In 1971, Krug acquired and replanted the Clos du Mesnil, a walled vineyard of less than 2 ha/5 acres. Its Chardonnay grapes provide one of Champagne's very few single-vineyard, or cru, wines of which the 1979 vintage was the first. Small quantities of the finest vintage Krug are released as Krug Collection about ten years after their initial release. Although the firm is run by members of the fifth and sixth generation of champagne-making Krugs, it has been owned by LVMH since 1999.

Wines displaying a 5 star designation are recognised as being of proven quality provenance, our team has verified that the wine has been stored correctly from original purchase straight from the winery, documentation, where possible, has been sighted and cellaring conditions have been inspected. This wine generally comes from only the best and most respected of wine collectors in Australia.

★ ★ ★ ★

Wines displaying a 4 star designation have been cellared correctly as verified by the current owners. In general these wines have been purchased from retailers or traders and stored in cellared conditions from original purchase.

★ ★ ★

Wines displaying a 3 star designation are in good condition when we inspect and we are able to confirm some cellaring conditions but we are unable to verify all ownership and storage conditions of their history.

A wine displaying no stars doesn’t mean that there is a problem with the wine, it simply means that we have been unable to verify provenance, however a quality image is always available for the purchaser to make their own purchasing decisions.

Private Cellar wine is wine which has been stored for aging purposes in a Private Cellar.

Storing the wine and allowing it to age has the potential to improve the quality of the wine. While wine is perishable and capable of deteriorating, storing the wine can alter the aroma, colour, mouthfeel and taste of the wine in a way that may be more pleasing to the taster.
