Description

GIANT ELEPHANT BIRD (AEPYORNIS) EGGSHELL FOSSIL FRAGMENT FROM THE PLEISTOCENE PERIOD (PALAEONTOLOGIST COLLECTION)

  • An Exceptionally Well Preserved Example Of A Pleistocene Period Fossilized Eggshell Fragment Belonging To The Giant Elephant Bird (Aepyornis). This Particular Piece Is From An Esteemed Private Palaeontological Collection.
  • Elephant Birds Are Extinct Flightless Birds Belonging To The Order Aepyornithiformes That Were Native To The Island Of Madagascar. Elephant Birds Comprised Three Species, One In The Genus Mullerornis, And Two In Aepyornis. Aepyornis Maximus Is Possibly The Largest Bird To Have Ever Lived, With Their Eggs Being The Largest Known For Any Amniote. Elephant Birds Are Palaeognaths (Whose Flightless Representatives Are Often Known As Ratites), And Their Closest Living Relatives Are Kiwi (Found Only In New Zealand), Suggesting That Ratites Did Not Diversify By Vicariance During The Breakup Of Gondwana But Instead Convergently Evolved Flightlessness From Ancestors That Dispersed More Recently By Flying.
  • Dated To Circa. 2.6 Million Years - 11,700 Years B.P. (Before Present) (Pleistocene Period).
  • Size: 55mm x 35mm x 5mm
  • Provenance: Discovered In An Archaeological Site In Madagascar During 1950s-1960s. Held In A Private Palaeontological Collection In Bristol, UK.
  • Condition: This Piece Is Extremely Well Preserved And Remains In Excellent Condition - Refer Images
  • Accompanied By A Certificate Of Authenticity, (This Piece Is Accompanied By An Internationally Recognised BidSafe Authentication And Verification Number: 7216971-16) (306703-5)
