Wine Summary Image

Robert O’Callaghan is the very modest owner and winemaker of Rockford Wines in the Barossa Valley. One of the most respected boutique wineries in Australia, Rockford produces the Basket Press Shiraz (first vintage 1984) and the Black Shiraz, a sparkling red that is almost black in colour.

In the l970s when wineries were updating their equipment, Robert bought and restored buildings from the 1850's and old winemaking machinery so that he could make his wines using both traditional winemaking techniques and equipment - his only concession to the latter half of the twentieth century is refrigeration and some new forms of yeast. The Shiraz fruit is sourced from local growers – many of the best dry-grown old vine Shiraz vineyards in the Barossa – including around Kalimna, Ebenezer, the Eden Valley and Central Barossa. The vines are between 60 and 136 years old giving fruit of tremendous colour, power and richness."

Expert Reviews

96 Points. James Halliday - Wine Companion, Aug 2016

“A great classic from a great vintage. At the end of the day, it's all about the grapes that come from loyal growers who shook hands with Rocky O'Callaghan many years ago. There are no magic tricks in the winery, just attention to detail.

Winery Profile

Rockford - The wines are sold through Adelaide retailers only (and the cellar doo) and are unknown to most eastern Australian wine-drinkers, which is a great pity because these are some of the most individual, spectacularly flavoured wines made in the Barossa today, with an emphasis on old, low-yielding dryland vineyards.

Supple and perfectly shaped, this traditional shiraz is deftly balanced and beautifully presented. Its heady bouquet of cassis, blackberries, redcurrants and cedary, faintly chocolatey oak reveals undertones of baked earth, and with aeration becomes steadily more opulent, musky, floral and peppery. Finely crafted, its supremely long and perfectly shaped, with layers of deep, dark and vibrant fruit that steadily emerge, tightly wrapped around a mouthwatering spine of dusty, pliant tannins and finished with a refreshing acidity. Its elegant and savoury, with a structure and flavour profile more suggestive of Eden Valley than the Barossa floor.
