Monowai Grey Label Pinot Noir 2020 (12 x 750mL) Hawke`s Bay, NZ

Description:

Winemaking

Fruit from low-yielding vines was selectively harvested, gently crushed and chilled for a pre-fermentation cold soak to extract colour and fruit flavour. The must was then warmed, inoculated with selected yeast and fermented over 7 days to dryness with a daily routine of traditional hand plunging to maximise tannin extraction.

Oak aging

After pressing the wine was matured in French oak barrels.

Cellaring Recommendations

This is a very approachable wine for drinking today but with enough structure and richness to develop very well over the next ten years.

Winery Tasting Notes

Notes Image

Aromas are of ripe strawberry and plum with notes of toast and spice. The ripe fruit flavours flow through to the palate with savoury undertones adding a layer of complexity. A delicate balance of acidity and tannin make this a wine which will age gracefully. This rich red wine is perfect for drinking with venison steak or roast duck.

A dedicated couple working and living their dream...

NEW ZEALAND winemaker Emma Lowe & Chilean vineyard manager Marcelo Nunez travelled from Chile to the foothills of the Kaweka Ranges to establish their vineyard and winery. The couple selected a site on the banks of the Ngaruroro River in Crownthorpe, a cooler, higher altitude district of the Hawke's Bay.Emma graduated with a degree in winemaking from Adelaide University (Australia) and has since made wines in Australia, Switzerland, South Africa, France, Chile and New Zealand. Marcelo has been extensively involved in both viticulture and winemaking in Chile and New Zealand. They planted their first vines in 2002 and produced their first wine in 2005. The Monowai label was launched in 2007.The Monowai name refers to the single expanse of ocean that separates their homelands. Literally, it means one water, which the couple has adopted as the Pacific Ocean between New Zealand and Chile, Marcelo’s homeland.Emma and Marcelo opted to plant five varieties best suited to the microclimate of the site, which are now well established. Their vineyard operations are managed by Marcelo. The varieties are Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot and Pinot Noir.Emma built her own winery on site using the latest technologies from her experience around the world and, as Monowai’s chief winemaker, she runs the winery with the help of one assistant. They process over 220 million tonnes of grapes annually to produce their own range of Monowai wine.
