A monumental, profoundly precise, and multi-layered wine.

It represents a highly historic milestone for the estate, serving as the final vintage vinified by legendary winemaker François Millet before his retirement.

In this warm, low-yielding growing season, the estate's ancient vines yielded a masterpiece that matches the classical plummy exuberance of Chambolle with profound saline power and monumental cellaring longevity.

Appearance: Brilliant, deep, and luminous ruby-purple core with high viscosity.

Aroma: Exquisitely pure and perfumed. It unfurls a grand bouquet of fresh blue and black fruits, ripe plums, and cassis. The dark fruit core is heavily layered with delicate wisps of violets, rose petals, sweet exotic spices, and a hint of mineral smoke.

Palate: The initial attack beguiles the palate with an amazingly silky, supple texture and a weightless sense of pure fruit. However, the intense depth of the mid-palate quickly reveals itself. It is driving, perfectly concentrated, and animated by a rigid, energetic vein of chalky limestone acidity.

Finish: Stupendously long and mineral-driven. It leaves a distinct sensation of saline mineral tension, seamlessly framed by subtle oak creaminess and noble, fine-grained tannins.

The mature vines in the domaine’s immense holding (5.56ha of old vines) have given us a wine with the youthful, plummy exuberance of Chambolle but with added precision and depth, revealing saline mineral notes, plus hints of flowers and spice. On the palate, the silky texture initially beguiles, and with time the firm structure and long finish become evident. Ageing in 35% new casks helps the wine retain an admirable purity of fruit. The 2020 vintage was the last vinified by François Millet, who took his retirement at a high point in his career. Drink 2025 - 2060. - Charles Curtis.

95-98 points - Burghound

As is often the case, this is aromatically similar to the Chambolle 1er but it's less expressive and perhaps more densely fruited. There is notably better mid-palate concentration to the substantially sized big-bodied flavors that also possess a positively gorgeous mouthfeel while exuding an abundance of mineral character on the hugely long and impeccably well-balanced and youthfully austere finale. This Zen-like effort is superb and a wine that should also age gracefully over the next two decades. Drink from 2040+. - Allen Meadows.

94-98 points - Inside Burgundy

Black colour with a purple rim. The fresh mulberry nose is reminiscent of the initial Chambolle wine, on the cusp of being too flamboyant. Behind this though I can find the quintessential intensity of Musigny, which becomes notably fresher at the back. This will work. You could spread the fruit with a knife, but everything is so intense that there is less detail than is usual at this stage. There may yet prove to be further upside to this wine. - Jasper Morris.

Winery Profile

Every estate in Burgundy yearns to have grands crus parcels in its portfolio. Some are quite richly endowed: Rousseau, Damoy, Trapet and Rossignol- Trapet (all in Gevrey-Chambertin); Clos de Tart and Clos des Lambrays (Morey-St-Denis); as well as Bonneau du Martray and Louis Latour (both in Corton). Domaine de la Romanée-Conti is unique in that it possesses nothing but grands crus.

Almost as spectacular is the parcel of Musigny owned by Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé – 7.2 hectares (ha), amounting to 70% of the entire grand cru. Given that many Burgundy aficionados consider Musigny to be the finest vineyard of them all, that’s a holding to die for. In addition, the estate is the largest owner within another grand cru, Bonnes-Mares.

Unlike many estates in Burgundy, de Vogüé has ancient architectural and viticultural origins, tracing its beginnings to the 15th century with ownership passing through 20 generations to the present proprietors. In 1925 it was inherited by Comte Georges de Vogüé, who ran the domaine for 52 years, and is now owned by his granddaughters, Claire de Causans and Marie de Ladoucette.

The estate went through a bad patch from the 1960s until the mid-1980s. The count was absent much of the time and entrusted the property to an estate manager, who allowed quality to slide. Then, in 1986, François Millet was hired as technical director, and 10 years later the aptly named Eric Bourgogne was taken on as vineyard manager – both of them are still in place. The turnaround was swift, and the 1990 Musigny was one of the great vines of that vintage, distilling, as do all great vintages from this site, exquisite perfume, silky textures, intensity of flavour, discreet but pronounced tannins and incredible persistence. Millet has always adopted a perfectionist’s approach, thus he considers the 1.8ha of vines under 25 years old to be unworthy of inclusion in the Musigny bottling; their production is bottled as Chambolle Premier Cru. ‘Why 25 years?’ says Millet, anticipating the question.

‘Because that’s how long it takes for the vines to express the greatness of the terroir. Young vines remain young vines, however fine the grapes may be. They’re like a gifted teenager, brilliant, but lacking in experience. It’s a question of complexity. The Chambolle Premier Cru is like Musigny in short trousers.’
