Wine Summary Image

Another Penfolds classic. Another blend of Barossa (Kalimna) Shiraz and Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon. Made by John Duval. I’ve had it since but below is my note from the 2007 Penfolds Rewards of Patience tastings.

This is the 1990 red wine Penfolds had to have. It inspires a beautiful set of numbers in your mouth. It’s got mint but it sits in the background, and because of that it’s better than any other 1990 Penfolds red by, to my taste and preference, a long degree. Fresh, savoury, developing steadily, correctly and well. Classic wine. Liquorice and blackcurrant and tobacco-herbs. This is a wine and a half. Great crack of tannin and dark berried flavour. Dimension.

Rating 98 - Drink to 2030 Cambpbell Mattinson, Wine Front 25 September 2013.

Expert Reviews

“The 1990 Bin 90A Coonawarra Cabernet - Barossa Valley Shiraz is the best Penfolds Coonawarra based wine from the legendary 1990 vintage and the last to be released, 5 years after its genesis in the vineyard. Regional Source: Coonawarra and the Penfolds Koonunga Hill Vineyard in the Barossa Valley, South Australia. Grape Variety: Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz (Syrah) Maturation: The wine was matured in new American oak barrels for 20 months.

Simultaneously concentrated, focused and wonderfully opulent in its overt strength of deep fruit mirrored by substantial oak, the wine simply reeks of squashed ripe berries, mint and creamy, slightly varnishy oak. Massively proportioned, the palate is a powerful mix of mouthfilling black fruits, chocolate oak and enormous, balanced tannins. A definitive Australian red.” (19.4, Drink 2010+) 97/100 Jeremy Oliver, OnWine.

Winery Profile

Australia's winemaking history of less than two hundred years is brief by European measures though, like Europe, punctuated by periods of extreme success and difficult times. From the earliest winemaking days Penfolds has figured prominently and few would argue the importance of Penfolds' influence on Australia's winemaking psyche.

Without the influence of Penfolds the modern Australian wine industry would look very different indeed. Sitting comfortably outside of fad and fashion, Penfolds has taken Australian wine to the world on a grand stage and forged a reputation for quality that is without peer.

Penfolds' reputation for making wines of provenance and cellaring potential might suggest a mantle of tradition and formality is the preferred attire of a company with so much history to defend. But to label Penfolds as simply an established and conventional winemaker, would be to confuse tradition with consideration and to overlook the innovative spirit that has driven Penfolds since its foundation, and continues to find expression in modern times.

If there is anything traditional about Penfolds, it is the practice of constantly reviewing the wines it already does well, and continuously evolving and refining styles as vineyards mature and access to ever older and more varied vineyard sites improves.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★

Wines displaying a 5 star designation are recognised as being of proven quality provenance, our team has verified that the wine has been stored correctly from original purchase straight from the winery, documentation, where possible, has been sighted and cellaring conditions have been inspected. This wine generally comes from only the best and most respected of wine collectors in Australia.

★ ★ ★ ★

Wines displaying a 4 star designation have been cellared correctly as verified by the current owners. In general these wines have been purchased from retailers or traders and stored in cellared conditions from original purchase.

★ ★ ★

Wines displaying a 3 star designation are in good condition when we inspect and we are able to confirm some cellaring conditions but we are unable to verify all ownership and storage conditions of their history.

A wine displaying no stars doesn’t mean that there is a problem with the wine, it simply means that we have been unable to verify provenance, however a quality image is always available for the purchaser to make their own purchasing decisions.

Private Cellar wine is wine which has been stored for aging purposes in a Private Cellar.

Storing the wine and allowing it to age has the potential to improve the quality of the wine. While wine is perishable and capable of deteriorating, storing the wine can alter the aroma, colour, mouthfeel and taste of the wine in a way that may be more pleasing to the taster.
