Nepenthe Good Dr Pinot Noir 2012 (6 x 750mL) Adelaide Hills, SA

Description:

Vintage

Vintage 2012 experienced average rainfall throughout the growing period and a slightly cooler than average flowering period resulting in lower bunch number and in turn, lower crop levels. Conditions during the ripening period were ideal with mild day time temperatures and cold nights frequently below 10oC, all conducive to excellent flavour development and the retention of natural acidity in the fruit. Harvest commenced in early February and lower than average crop levels led to fruit ripening quickly and another condensed vintage. The combination of low crop levels and mild conditions during the ripening period has resulted in some of the best quality fruit for a number of years. Murray Leake – Viticulturist

Winemaking

Pinot noir is suited to high altitude (i.e. cool), low-vigour sites in the central Hills. The 2012 Good Doctor blend is a combination of fruit from our estate blocks at Lenswood along and one grower high up (600m) in the hills north east of Woodside. The estate blocks at Lenswood are steep, with shallow, gravelly soils. Soil at the Woodside grower is sandy loam with ironstone. All fruit is hand-picked Fruit and rapidly transported to the winery where fermentation occurs in tank; time on skins 10 days. After pressing the wine is allowed to settle for 24 hours, and then racked to French oak barrels (~30% brand new) with the balance made up of 1 to 2 year old barrels. Malolatic fermentation occurs spontaneously in barrel; the wine is then racked and left to age in barrel for 10 months. Intensive barrel tasting and selection is undertaken to ensure only the best are selected for the Good Doctor. Alex Trescowthick – Winemaker

Winery Tasting Notes

Notes Image

Colour

Deep garnet red. The depth of colour is a reflection of the warm vintage conditions and a hint of the power to come

Bouquet

The nose is initially quite herbal, a hallmark of this variety. Dried herbs and mint are the flavours that arise first but upon looking deeper, raspberry and cherry flavours become apparent. Expect the herbal aromatics to develop in time into forest floor complexity.

Palate

The Pinnacle wines are always true expressions of their vintage and the 2012 Good Doctor is no exception. The palate is rich and powerful with bright herbal tones matched by delightful strawberry and black cherry characters. The wine has firm ripe tannins that will mellow over the next five years, building complexity and a soft mouth feel.

Winery Profile

Brand Profile Image

In 1994, the Tweddell family purchased a premium property in the sub-region of Lenswood in the Adelaide Hills.  The property was carefully selected and planted to 24 hectares of vines with the intent of producing premium wine.  Proven varieties such as Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc were planted, as well as interesting varieties such as Zinfandel and Pinot Gris.  In 1996, Nepenthe received approval to build its winery, only the second in the Adelaide hills at the time (the first being Petaluma in 1978).

In the backdrop of the cool heights of the Adelaide Hills, we started producing some soul reposing potions of our own: uncompromising wines of outstanding quality and internationally recognised distinction. Wines that, strangely enough, have been impressing both critics and consumers with their varietal faithfulness and subtle Adelaide Hills nuances.

From the beginning, our wines have received positive review from the press and numerous medals on the show circuit. In the first few vintages, Nepenthe wines featured in James Halliday’s Top 100, The UK Times Top 100, The Advertiser Top 100, The International Wine Challenge as well as many other feature media articles.

The success of the wines is evident in the market place.  Currently,  Nepenthe sell nationally and our wines are exported to the United Kingdom, USA, Japan, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Canada, Switzerland, Holland, Sweden, Denmark and Croatia. In all these markets the press and public have warmly received Nepenthe wines.

Due to this demand, in 1997 Nepenthe acquired a property in Charleston within the Adelaide Hills and has planted a further 43 hectares of vineyard. Then in 2002 a 25 hectare vineyard was acquired in Balhannah (where our cellar door is located), and in 2005 Nepenthe acquired its latest vineyard, 38 hectares in Hahndorf, with room for further expansion.

Nepenthe also sources fruit from a variety of vineyards throughout the hills. Most fruit Nepenthe receives is managed by Nepenthe Viticulture, part of the Nepenthe Group. This company ensures that Nepenthe only receives the highest quality fruit, ensuring strict control of the grapes that make our award winning wines.
