Expert Reviews

“A restrained, elegant Meshach with elegance and poise, and without the portiness of earlier vintages. Powerful youthful aromas of violets, spicy plums and cassis are supported by creamy vanilla and dark chocolate oak with hints of mocha, cedar and fennel. Fleshy but also firm, round, supple and balanced. Drink 2006. ” Jeremy Oliver, OnWine Report, Oct — Nov, 1999

Winery Tasting Notes

Notes Image

The fruit was handpicked from 80 year old vines at a ripened Baume of 14°, from my Filsell Vineyard in between Lyndock and Williamstown.

Once picked, the grapes were crushed into 8 tonne stainless steel fermenters. Fermentation took 7 days before the Baume reached 2.5°-3.0°, and then free run juice was drained off the remaining skins to be pressed. The fermenting juice was then transferred to American Oak hogsheads to complete fermentation to dryness.

After racking and various blendings, the wine was matured in American oak for a period of 24-28 months before filtering and bottling. Meshach was then matured in bottle for another two and a half years before release.

Winery Profile

Grant Burge is a fifth-generation Barossa Vigneron. Throughout his career, Grant has been one of the most respected and innovative forces in the Australian wine industry. The history of the Burge family and their long association with winemaking in the region can be traced back to March 1855, when noted tailor John Burge immigrated to the Barossa from Hillcot, near Pewsey in Wiltshire, England with his wife Eliza and their two sons.

Grant Burge Wines was formed in 1988 by Grant and his wife Helen, and is located in the heart of the Barossa Valley on the banks of Jacobs Creek and is still proudly family owned.

The fruit for this Iconic Shiraz is carefully handpicked from the Filsell Vineyard, where the vines are nearing 100 years old. Smaller parcels are also sourced from even older premium vines in the Barossa to add further complexities to the wine.

Meshach is a highly, concentrated, generous Barossa style with a ripe, dense palate packed with fruit, pronounced tannins and seasoned by American oak. Maturation programme is identical to Grange. Great potential for longevity.
