Part of Sale Curated Fine Wine Collection :: 60 Years of Australian Wine
Warranty
Wine Summary Image

A spectacular, highly collected Barossa icon. Sourced from dry-grown old vines aged between 60 and 140 years, it beautifully captures Rockford's signature blend of traditional power and savory, old-school elegance.

Colour: Deep, bold crimson-red with intense ruby and purple highlights.

Nose: A refined, complex "sotto voce" bouquet displaying plum pudding, fruitcake, and violet perfume. It is layered with subtle herbal aromas, mahogany, walnut, and a suggestion of roasting meats.

Palate: Rich and full-bodied with a deeply concentrated core of ripe black plum, blackberry, and dark cherry. These fruits are interwoven with dark chocolate, espresso coffee, tobacco, and cracked black pepper.

Mouthfeel: Seamlessly balanced and sure-footed. It has a restrained, natural fruit sweetness at its heart rather than brute force, expertly supported by clean acidity.

Finish: It features silty, finely textured, slightly drying tannins that build exceptional poise. The finish is remarkably long and persistent, echoing iodine, savory oak, and spice.

Expert Reviews

Huon Hooke, The Real Review - 95 points

"Deep, bold red colour laced with purple; plum pudding, fruitcake and subtle herb aromas, a suggestion of roasting meats, oak not discernible, but the fruit is savoury, mellow and not especially primary. It’s medium-full bodied and the same softly savoury but drying tannins and flavours are present, all consistent with the maker's style. There is a restrained fruit sweetness at its core, and appealing balance in the flavour, bouquet and mouth-feel. Good length and satisfying to drink. A sotto voce Basket Press, drinking well already. Drink 2022-2037."

Gary Walsh, The Wine Front - 93 points

"Rich, dark wine, with some violet perfume, but also a mahogany/walnut sort of thing happening, along with dark chocolate, and toasty oak. It’s full-bodied, has good concentration, and while the tannin is perhaps a little drying, it’s early days for it, of course. Coffee and iodine, silty tannin on finish of good intensity and length. Thick and sure-footed, it’s a good release, though not top shelf. Drink 2024-2035."

Winery Profile

Brand Profile Image

Rockford - The wines are sold through Adelaide retailers only (and the cellar door) and are unknown to most eastern Australian wine-drinkers, which is a great pity because these are some of the most individual, spectacularly flavoured wines made in the Barossa today, with an emphasis on old, low-yielding dryland vineyards.

Provenance; “Place of origin; derivation”

  • The history of the ownership of an object, especially when documented or authenticated. Used for Artworks, Antiques, and Wine.
  • The records or documents authenticating such an object or the history of its ownership.

Whenever you buy wine there is an inherent risk, as wine is a perishable good regardless of whether it is sealed under cork or screwcap. At GraysOnline we minimise the risk to you by providing as much information as possible regarding the provenance of the wine we sell.

We take the time to individually inspect each bottle and photograph it so you know exactly what you are buying. All Private Cellar wine stored at GraysOnline is kept in a temperature controlled wine storage area. Any wine that doesn’t meet our quality standards will not be sold.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★

Wines displaying a 5 star designation are recognised as being of proven quality provenance, our team has verified that the wine has been stored correctly from original purchase straight from the winery, documentation, where possible, has been sighted and cellaring conditions have been inspected. This wine generally comes from only the best and most respected of wine collectors in Australia.

★ ★ ★ ★

Wines displaying a 4 star designation have been cellared correctly as verified by the current owners. In general these wines have been purchased from retailers or traders and stored in cellared conditions from original purchase.

★ ★ ★

Wines displaying a 3 star designation are in good condition when we inspect and we are able to confirm some cellaring conditions but we are unable to verify all ownership and storage conditions of their history.

A wine displaying no stars doesn’t mean that there is a problem with the wine, it simply means that we have been unable to verify provenance, however a quality image is always available for the purchaser to make their own purchasing decisions.

Private Cellar wine is wine which has been stored for aging purposes in a Private Cellar.

Storing the wine and allowing it to age has the potential to improve the quality of the wine. While wine is perishable and capable of deteriorating, storing the wine can alter the aroma, colour, mouthfeel and taste of the wine in a way that may be more pleasing to the taster.
