Wine Summary Image

Item Includes:

  • 1x Mark Ryan Crazy Mary Mourvèdre 2014
  • 1x Mark Ryan Lost Soul Syrah 2015
  • (337374-244)

Both of these highly-regarded bottles hail from the acclaimed Mark Ryan Winery in Washington State, USA.

Because they have significant bottle age, they are currently exhibiting complex, savoury tertiary characteristics.

Mark Ryan "Crazy Mary" Mourvèdre 2014

Variety: Primarily Mourvèdre blended with small amounts of Grenache and Syrah.

Aroma: Initially brooding but highly intriguing. It opens with intense dark cherry, wild bramble, and sweet plum, woven together with savoury elements of cured meat, black pepper, and ground coffee.

Palate: Packs a major wallop of rich, dark fruit flavours. Earthy, gamy characteristics of smoke and leather are tightly integrated with the fruit profile.

Structure & Finish: Features firm, balanced tannins and subtle heat on the back palette. It finishes exceptionally long with lingering notes of dark cacao and dried herbs.

Mark Ryan "Lost Soul" Syrah 2015

Variety: 100% Syrah sourced from the historic Red Willow Vineyard in the Yakima Valley.

Aroma: Fully developed and complex. Generous layers of blackberry jam and blueberry pie filling lead into secondary notes of cigar tobacco, sage, black pepper, and charred cedar.

Palate: Dry and full-bodied, yet driven by high, fresh acidity that keeps the massive fruit profile energetic. Pronounced dark berry fruits mix beautifully with smoked meat and leather.

Structure & Finish: The bold tannins have softened beautifully with age. It carries a broad-shouldered structure into a remarkably persistent, lingering finish highlighted by coffee grounds and savoury maturity.

Expert Reviews

Crazy Mary 2014 - 93 Pts - Wine Advocate

One of the best Mourvèdre coming out of Washington is the 2014 Mourvedre Crazy Mary from this team. Its deep purple color is followed by a ripe, yet surprisingly elegant and silky red that gives up classic blueberries, caramelized black cherries, licorice and peppery spice aromas and flavors. Medium to full-bodied, focused and clean on the palate, with terrific purity, give bottles a year or three and drink over the following decade. - Jeb Dunnuck. 1st July 2017.

Lost Soul 2015 - 93 Pts - Owen Bargreen

Praised as an "awesome effort," noting aromas of black olive tapenade, blackberry cordial, and black cherry preserves, with a rich palate of black tea and blueberry pie.

Whenever you buy wine there is an inherent risk, as wine is a perishable good regardless of whether it is sealed under cork or screwcap. At GraysOnline we minimise the risk to you by providing as much information as possible regarding the provenance of the wine we sell.

We take the time to individually inspect each bottle and photograph it so you know exactly what you are buying. All Private Cellar wine stored at GraysOnline is kept in a temperature controlled wine storage area. Any wine that doesn’t meet our quality standards will not be sold.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★

Wines displaying a 5 star designation are recognised as being of proven quality provenance, our team has verified that the wine has been stored correctly from original purchase straight from the winery, documentation, where possible, has been sighted and cellaring conditions have been inspected. This wine generally comes from only the best and most respected of wine collectors in Australia.

★ ★ ★ ★

Wines displaying a 4 star designation have been cellared correctly as verified by the current owners. In general these wines have been purchased from retailers or traders and stored in cellared conditions from original purchase.

★ ★ ★

Wines displaying a 3 star designation are in good condition when we inspect and we are able to confirm some cellaring conditions but we are unable to verify all ownership and storage conditions of their history.

A wine displaying no stars doesn’t mean that there is a problem with the wine, it simply means that we have been unable to verify provenance, however a quality image is always available for the purchaser to make their own purchasing decisions.

Private Cellar wine is wine which has been stored for aging purposes in a Private Cellar.

Storing the wine and allowing it to age has the potential to improve the quality of the wine. While wine is perishable and capable of deteriorating, storing the wine can alter the aroma, colour, mouthfeel and taste of the wine in a way that may be more pleasing to the taster.
