Wine Summary Image

Item Includes:

  • 1x Mount Langi Ghiran Langi Shiraz 2018
  • 1x Mount Langi Ghiran Langi Shiraz 2019

Both of these sensational vintages come from Mount Langi Ghiran, the ultimate benchmark for cool-climate Australian Shiraz located in Victoria's rugged Grampians region.

Sourced primarily from the historic "Old Block" vines planted in 1969, the "Langi" Shiraz is famous for its stunning synergy of power, perfume, and intense black pepper characters.

2018

Aroma: Strikingly fresh, bright, and fruit-driven. It springs from the glass with vibrant blueberry, mulberry, and floral notes, backed up by dark chocolate, spice, and a more subtle, integrated white pepper character than is typical for this estate.

Palate: Brilliantly vibrant and tightly compacted. It features a sweet-fruit core of red and black berries mixed with complex, savoury nuances like jalapeño and forest floor. It is highly concentrated without ever feeling heavy or over-extracted.

Structure & Finish: Highly polished and seamlessly balanced. The tannins are incredibly fine and deceptively subtle, leading into a long, joyous, and spice-driven finish where the oak remains elegantly hidden

2019

Aroma: Highly impactful and powerful. It is lavishly seasoned with intense cracked pepper, graphite, and rocky minerality, opening up to a dark, complex medley of blackberry jam, clove, tobacco, and cedar.

Palate: Massive, rich, and intensely focused. A big, ripe expression of Langi that carries great volume, depth, and concentration. Mouth-coating layers of choc-cherries, dark plums, and liquorice are balanced by an underlying whole-bunch herbal and game-meat savouriness.

Structure & Finish: Built for serious longevity with an austere, iron-like structural spine. Driven by structured acidity and highly persistent, mouth-coating velvety tannins, it drives into an incredibly long, palate-staining finish.

Expert Reviews

99 (Halliday Wine Companion); 96 (Halliday Wine Companion)

2018 - 99 Pts

Hand-picked, wild-fermented with 80% whole bunches and 20% whole berries, 2-3 weeks on skins, matured for 18 months in French barriques (18% new), 280 dozen made. Wonderfully, tumultuously intense yet balanced, black licorice and herbal/foresty nuances all in play. - James Halliday, 11 July 2021.

2019 - 96 Pts

Hand-picked fruit, 90/10% whole berries/bunches into small open-top fermenters with natural yeasts. Pressed to tank, transferred to French oak barriques (60% new) for mlf and 18 months' maturation. The Swiss clone, planted in 1969 and still on its own roots, is at the heart of this impressive flagship shiraz. It has a deep vein of ripeness of dark plum, aniseed, sage, lifted wood spices and blackberries. Taut across the palate in structure but velvety in flavour, it raises the question of when to drink. The answer: not just now, if possible. - Jeni Port, 13 August 2021.

Provenance; “Place of origin; derivation”

  • The history of the ownership of an object, especially when documented or authenticated. Used for Artworks, Antiques, and Wine.
  • The records or documents authenticating such an object or the history of its ownership.

Whenever you buy wine there is an inherent risk, as wine is a perishable good regardless of whether it is sealed under cork or screwcap. At GraysOnline we minimise the risk to you by providing as much information as possible regarding the provenance of the wine we sell.

We take the time to individually inspect each bottle and photograph it so you know exactly what you are buying. All Private Cellar wine stored at GraysOnline is kept in a temperature controlled wine storage area. Any wine that doesn’t meet our quality standards will not be sold.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★

Wines displaying a 5 star designation are recognised as being of proven quality provenance, our team has verified that the wine has been stored correctly from original purchase straight from the winery, documentation, where possible, has been sighted and cellaring conditions have been inspected. This wine generally comes from only the best and most respected of wine collectors in Australia.

★ ★ ★ ★

Wines displaying a 4 star designation have been cellared correctly as verified by the current owners. In general these wines have been purchased from retailers or traders and stored in cellared conditions from original purchase.

★ ★ ★

Wines displaying a 3 star designation are in good condition when we inspect and we are able to confirm some cellaring conditions but we are unable to verify all ownership and storage conditions of their history.

A wine displaying no stars doesn’t mean that there is a problem with the wine, it simply means that we have been unable to verify provenance, however a quality image is always available for the purchaser to make their own purchasing decisions.

Private Cellar wine is wine which has been stored for aging purposes in a Private Cellar.

Storing the wine and allowing it to age has the potential to improve the quality of the wine. While wine is perishable and capable of deteriorating, storing the wine can alter the aroma, colour, mouthfeel and taste of the wine in a way that may be more pleasing to the taster.
