Top Vintage

The Mount Edelstone vineyard, situated in the Eden Valley, was planted in 1912 by Ronald Angas, a descendant of George Fife Angas, who founded South Australia. Unusual for its time, it was planted solely to shiraz. The ancient 500 million year-old soils on the vineyard are deep red-brown clay-loam to clay resulting in low yields from the nearly 90-year-old dry-grown ungrafted vines. First bottled as a single-vineyard wine in 1952, it became recognised as one of Australia’s greatest shiraz wines.

The 90 year old ungrafted dry grown vines from this historic vineyard are low yielding producing intensity of colour, depth of fruit flavours, complexity and palate length. The Shiraz was hand picked in mid April and matured in new and seasoned American and French oak hogsheads for eighteen months. Mount Edelstone has received awards at National Wine Shows every year since 1956.

The 2005 Mount Edelstone is a 100% Shiraz cuvee sourced from a vineyard planted in 1912. Yields are a meager 0.3 to 0.5 tons of fruit per acre. In combination with a near ideal growing season, this has resulted in a great edition of Mount Edelstone, one of South Australia’s iconic wines. Purple-colored, the nose gives up notes of mocha, chocolate, smoked meat, pepper, leather, blueberry, and blackberry. Elegant, already complex, layered, and thoroughly satisfying, this superb Shiraz has enough baby fat to be enjoyed now but will amply reward 5-7 years of cellaring. It will drink beautifully through 2025.

Deep crimson in colour with a purple hue.

Nose

Powerful, ripe aromas of blackberry and plum with complexing hints of star anise, ferns, eucalypt and dark chocolate.

Palate

The palate is an intense and concentrated blend of sweet, juicy plum pudding fruit and structured ripe tannin. With mouthfilling power, seamless texture and lingering finish the wine displays the hallmark characters of the Mount Edelstone vineyard in one of its greatest years.

Matured in 90% new, 10% seasoned French (67%) and American (33%) hogsheads for 21 months prior to blending and bottling.

Deep crimson/black in colour. A delightfully fragrant bouquet of anise, plum, sage and pepper with blackberry and vanilla hints adding complexity. The palate is lush and fleshy in texture with elegant fine, velvety tannins contributing to the wine’s length.
