Expert Reviews

"Full red-purple; smooth, satiny, almost creamy plum fruit in the bouquet which will develop greater complexity with age. The palate is solid and well constructed, with plenty of dark fruit and tannins to match. 10 per cent Cabernet Sauvignon."

Rating 94 Drink 2005 - James Halliday Date Tasted Nov 94

Winery Tasting Notes

Notes Image

Colour

The 1990 Penfolds St. Henri Shiraz is vibrant, deep crimson-red in colour.

Aroma

The complex bouquet is dominated by intense, rich, ripe Shiraz portrayed as earthy, and liquorice and subtle spicy fruit with underlying subtle oak and maturation characters.

Palate

This highly individual, fruit-driven red is full bodied, rich and complex. The mouth filling, ripe Shiraz flavours are soft, round and smooth, showing attractive pepper, spice and dark cherry varietal character.

Winemaker comments by Phillip John

The result of an excellent vintage in South Australia, the 1990 Penfolds St. Henri is one of the very best made since its introduction more than three decades ago. Penfolds St. Henri, like Grange Hermitage, has built a tradition over many years as a wine renowned for its rich fruit flavour and longevity.

The St. Henri style, however, emphasises elegance. The grapes are selected for sophisticated fruit character rather than intensity and, in contrast to other Penfolds reds, prominent oak is not an important element of the style.

Winery Profile

Australia's winemaking history of less than two hundred years is brief by European measures though, like Europe, punctuated by periods of extreme success and difficult times. From the earliest winemaking days Penfolds has figured prominently and few would argue the importance of Penfolds' influence on Australia's winemaking psyche.

Without the influence of Penfolds the modern Australian wine industry would look very different indeed. Sitting comfortably outside of fad and fashion, Penfolds has taken Australian wine to the world on a grand stage and forged a reputation for quality that is without peer.

Penfolds' reputation for making wines of provenance and cellaring potential might suggest a mantle of tradition and formality is the preferred attire of a company with so much history to defend. But to label Penfolds as simply an established and conventional winemaker, would be to confuse tradition with consideration and to overlook the innovative spirit that has driven Penfolds since its foundation, and continues to find expression in modern times.

If there is anything traditional about Penfolds, it is the practice of constantly reviewing the wines it already does well, and continuously evolving and refining styles as vineyards mature and access to ever older and more varied vineyard sites improves.

Deep garnet colored, this St Henri has a complex, evolved, dried fruit nose with notes of mulberries, figs and creme de cassis plus nuances of old leather, potpourri and baking spices in the background. The ripe, expressive, medium-full bodied palate lends a medium level of grainy tannins, refreshing acid and a long very spicy finish. Rating 94, Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW, eRobertParker.com, Jan 2012
