Wine Summary Image

A monumental, blockbuster red wine from the western edge of the Barossa Valley, South Australia.

Known for its unashamedly opulent and incredibly powerful style, this vintage stands out for its staggering concentration and high natural alcohol volume (17% ABV), which manages to retain impressive balance through sheer fruit intensity.

Colour: Totally saturated black-purple with a dense ink-like cling to the glass, fading to a deep brick-garnet rim with bottle age.

Nose: A brooding and explosive bouquet featuring smoke, dark chocolate, vanilla, and spice. It is layered with secondary complexities of lavender, damp earth, game, and deep blueberry liqueur.

Palate: A massive block of flavour that is incredibly dense and compressed. It floods the palate with unctuous, velvety waves of liquorice, blackberry, plum, and black pepper. The wood spices and rich cocoa notes are immense, wrapped in an extraordinarily generous, full-bodied structure.

Finish: Exceptionally long and very peppery, framed by firm, fine-grained tannins and a lingering, warm, smoky American oak presence.

Expert Reviews

91 Pts - Wine Advocate

The 2006 Shiraz Alices is more dense and saturated than the Seven Acre cuvee. It exhibits a brooding nose of smoke, lavender, damp earth, game, and blueberry. Firm and a bit closed down on the palate, this structured effort is still tightly wound and will require extended cellaring of 6-8 years. It seems to have all the right stuff to ultimately reveal its full potential but time will tell.

Greenock Creek’s latest collection is a bit more mixed than usual due to the more challenging nature of the vintages from which these wine were produced. There is one bit of sad news; their Creek Block parcel is no longer commercially viable due to the age of the vines and will no longer be produced.

  • Jay S Miller, 22nd Dec 2009.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★

Wines displaying a 5 star designation are recognised as being of proven quality provenance, our team has verified that the wine has been stored correctly from original purchase straight from the winery, documentation, where possible, has been sighted and cellaring conditions have been inspected. This wine generally comes from only the best and most respected of wine collectors in Australia.

★ ★ ★ ★

Wines displaying a 4 star designation have been cellared correctly as verified by the current owners. In general these wines have been purchased from retailers or traders and stored in cellared conditions from original purchase.

★ ★ ★

Wines displaying a 3 star designation are in good condition when we inspect and we are able to confirm some cellaring conditions but we are unable to verify all ownership and storage conditions of their history.

A wine displaying no stars doesn’t mean that there is a problem with the wine, it simply means that we have been unable to verify provenance, however a quality image is always available for the purchaser to make their own purchasing decisions.

Private Cellar wine is wine which has been stored for aging purposes in a Private Cellar.

Storing the wine and allowing it to age has the potential to improve the quality of the wine. While wine is perishable and capable of deteriorating, storing the wine can alter the aroma, colour, mouthfeel and taste of the wine in a way that may be more pleasing to the taster.
