Matua Lands & Legends Pinot Noir 2017 (6 x 750mL) Central Otago, NZ

Description:

2017 was another incredible year for Central Otago Pinot Noir, with aromatically intense wines and a combination of fruit concentration, power, and elegance. Matua is in the enviable position of having access to a range of vineyard sites from across Central Otago’s sub regions, resulting in balanced wines with wonderful depth and complexity. Select parcels of fruit were hand-harvested for this wine, chosen for their expressive flavour profiles. Delivered to the winery in pristine condition, the whole bunches were gently destemmed intoopen top fermenters with a portion undergoing carbonic fermentation to enhance complexity and texture.

After an initial cold soak, each parcel was warmed and innoculated with our house style yeast and carefully and minimally handled to extractdepth and concentration of flavour from the skins. Each parcel was thenpressed to a selection of new and seasoned French oak barriques for maturation. After 10 months of ageing, only the best barrels were blended together to create this concentrated and elegant Central Otago Pinot Noir.

Winery Tasting Notes

Notes Image

This aromatic Pinot Noir starts with concentrated ripe cherries, combined with hints of tabbaco leaf and a rich smoky char from French oak. On the palate, ripe fruit flavours of dark plum unfold to a earthy wild spice with a ripe and juicy finish. Concentrated & supple, this is classic Central Otago Pinot Noir at its best.

Winery Profile

The Founders

As a small, family-run winery in West Auckland, Matua Vally quickly gained a reputation for innovation, award-winning New Zealand wines.

In 1974, two brothers, Bill and Ross Spence, began their dream of making wine finer than any of their contemporaries could imagine. While they were the sons of a winemaking father, theirs was a winemaking tradition in the old style, one that neither was inclined to follow. They wanted to make wine in New Zealand that was as good as any in the world.

The Name

The name Matua (mah-too-ah) in Maori means "main stem", "foremost" or "head of the family". A very appropriate title, as this is the winery credited with producing New Zealand's first Sauvignon Blanc.

A less publicised triumph was the impression the Sauvignon Blanc had made amongst the other winemakers, leading to the decision to include large quantities of this variety in the first vineyards to be planted in the now famous Marlborough region.
