Expert Reviews

Gold & 96 pts - Halliday Rating. 60/25/15% grenache/touriga/tempranillo; matured in French oak, 20% new, for 15 months. Openly expressive from the start, with grenache soaring from the glass in all its red-fruited and floral glory, darker cherries and blue florals from the minor partners trailing behind, along with a gentle cedar and chocolate oak note. On the palate, hints of cola, roasted fennel and caraway seeds adorn a wine of relatively medium heft and joyously open and expressive mouth perfume. The skilfully extracted and ultra-fine tannins underline the class. Marcus Ellis, 12 August 2025.

Winery Tasting Notes

Notes Image

The Heirloom Vineyards Anevo Fortress McLaren Vale is a blend of 65% Grenache, 20% Touriga and 15% Tempranillo. Hand tended vines, whole bunch fermented, basket pressed and matured in French oak barrels for 15 months; 20% new French oak.

COLOUR: Dark and deep red purple yet with bright light flashes of vermillion.

AROMA: Violet petals just crushed by a fairy’s hand. Lifted grenache singing an aromatic song of cherries and red berry fruits and then of touriga and tempranillo’s olive and bay leaf and tobacco notes. Everything hints at something undiscovered and yet reassuring. Oak a fleeting memory; savoury fruit aromatics ascend.

PALATE: Minerality. An acid line. The bright fruits continue, helping to achieve a wonderfully medium palate weight in what is otherwise the three-way partnership of three serious business grapes. (Cigars at luncheon, sort of thing… Not a food and wine suggestion, one understands…) These bright and fresh fruit flavours carry through, and yet the tannins and the depth from touriga and tempranillo balance the entire effect. Long and swirling and never heavy nor iron-bottomed. An alive red wine.
