Nepenthe Petraea Sauvignon Blanc 2010 (6 x 750mL) Adelaide Hills, SA

Description:

THE VINTAGE

Vintage 2010 will be remembered favourably for producing conditions ideal for grape ripeningand harvest. Budburst was again early in 2009 with the vines waking up as early as August. Rainfall tracked above average for both winter and spring for the first time in years, giving all vines as much needed soaking and resulting in excellent canopy growth. The ripening period was then very dry, with mild temperatures andimportantly cool nights. These ideal conditionsallowed us to harvest the fruit at optimal ripeness and allowed for the development of powerful varietal flavours across all varieties. Murray Leake – Viticulturist

WINEMAKING

Fruit is harvested from our two top Sauvignon Blanc vineyards in the coolest hours of night. It is then rapidly transferred to the winery where it’s crushed, chilled if required, pressed and allowed to settle for 4-6 days. After inoculation with selected dried yeasts the juice is moved to a 2500L oak cask for ferment. The wine is left on lees with regular stirring, when the desired texture is achieved sulphur is added and the wine is stored in the cask for 5 months. Alex Trescowthick – Winemaker

Expert Reviews

Gold & 95 Pts - Halliday Rating.

Bright, pale straw-green; the impact of six months in large format (2500 l) French oak is as profound as it is beneficial, the bouquet with a classy combination of restraint and complexity, the equally complex palate waiting for the lemon and grapefruit to lance through the minerally/savoury forerunners. - James Halliday, 11 August 2011.

95 Points - Jeremy Oliver

Colour

Pale Straw

Bouquet

A subtle, complex bouquet of passion fruit and gooseberry with herbal notes of cucumber and freshly cut grass.

Palate

The palate if the Petraea is characterised by texture, complexity and length. Tropical flavours mix with fresh, grassy characters, while the impact of the oak is seen in the flavour of lemon curd and the creamy texture.

Enjoy the Petraea with oily fish such as Salmon or tuna, rich chicken dishes and Sushi. It will also match well to lighter cheese such as fresh mozzarella, haloumi and fetta.

Winery Profile

Brand Profile Image

In 1994, the Tweddell family purchased a premium property in the sub-region of Lenswood in the Adelaide Hills.  The property was carefully selected and planted to 24 hectares of vines with the intent of producing premium wine.  Proven varieties such as Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc were planted, as well as interesting varieties such as Zinfandel and Pinot Gris.  In 1996, Nepenthe received approval to build its winery, only the second in the Adelaide hills at the time (the first being Petaluma in 1978).

In the backdrop of the cool heights of the Adelaide Hills, we started producing some soul reposing potions of our own: uncompromising wines of outstanding quality and internationally recognised distinction. Wines that, strangely enough, have been impressing both critics and consumers with their varietal faithfulness and subtle Adelaide Hills nuances.

From the beginning, our wines have received positive review from the press and numerous medals on the show circuit. In the first few vintages, Nepenthe wines featured in James Halliday’s Top 100, The UK Times Top 100, The Advertiser Top 100, The International Wine Challenge as well as many other feature media articles.

The success of the wines is evident in the market place.  Currently,  Nepenthe sell nationally and our wines are exported to the United Kingdom, USA, Japan, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Canada, Switzerland, Holland, Sweden, Denmark and Croatia. In all these markets the press and public have warmly received Nepenthe wines.

Due to this demand, in 1997 Nepenthe acquired a property in Charleston within the Adelaide Hills and has planted a further 43 hectares of vineyard. Then in 2002 a 25 hectare vineyard was acquired in Balhannah (where our cellar door is located), and in 2005 Nepenthe acquired its latest vineyard, 38 hectares in Hahndorf, with room for further expansion.

Nepenthe also sources fruit from a variety of vineyards throughout the hills. Most fruit Nepenthe receives is managed by Nepenthe Viticulture, part of the Nepenthe Group. This company ensures that Nepenthe only receives the highest quality fruit, ensuring strict control of the grapes that make our award winning wines.
