“A Bin 28 worth the wait! A great Bin Shiraz ambassadorial offer to proclaim the spoils of the 2010 vintage. All elements resonate in 2010.”

“The complete Bin 28 package … this wine would do any Bin 28 vintage back to 1959 proud.” “Shouts: “Bin 28’s back!” Not that it ever went away, just in case anyone was wondering.  Certainly a Bin 28 to buy, to cellar, to drink!” Peter Gago - Penfolds Chief Winemaker

Penfolds Bin 28 is a showcase for warm-climate Australian Shiraz - ripe, robust and generously flavoured. First made in 1959, Bin 28 is named after the famous Barossa Valley Kalimna vineyard purchased by Penfolds in 1945 and from which the wine was originally sourced. Today, Bin 28 is a multi-region, multivineyard blend, with the Barossa Valley always well represented, providing a substantial proportion of the fruit for this vintage.

Expert Reviews

Bright colour and personality, this represents excellent value, as the bouquet reveals a depth of dark fruit and complexity of character often seen in more highly regarded bins from Penfolds; bright fruited, layered and long, there is an evenness to this wine that rings true with the house style and will be certain to engage and please avid consumers of the brand. Rating 94 - Drink by 2025 - Ben Edwards, Wine Companion (JAN/2013)

Colour

Deep, black-cherry red.

Aroma

In a word, Shiraz. Style? Unhesitantly, warm(er)-climate. Generous, distinctive. An initial lift of coffee grind, mocha/malt and spice sequentially volatilise, consorting to form an initial aromatic wave. Then, ascending elements of dark chocolate, black licorice, European dark-berry fruit salad … with an emphasis on the dark/black! No new oak? Not part of the Bin 28 mindset. Yet so much more lies beneath …

Palate

Full-bodied and multi-dimensional. An assortment of flavours, including blackcurrant, dates, beef and stout pie, dried fig … Expansive – length, depth and weight … reverberating with amplitude and attitude! Mid-palate fruit sweetness, aligned with solid/firm tannins, culminating in a long, lingering finish.

Cellaring

2014 – 2035.

Winery Profile

Australia's winemaking history of less than two hundred years is brief by European measures though, like Europe, punctuated by periods of extreme success and difficult times. From the earliest winemaking days Penfolds has figured prominently and few would argue the importance of Penfolds' influence on Australia's winemaking psyche.

Without the influence of Penfolds the modern Australian wine industry would look very different indeed. Sitting comfortably outside of fad and fashion, Penfolds has taken Australian wine to the world on a grand stage and forged a reputation for quality that is without peer.

Penfolds' reputation for making wines of provenance and cellaring potential might suggest a mantle of tradition and formality is the preferred attire of a company with so much history to defend. But to label Penfolds as simply an established and conventional winemaker, would be to confuse tradition with consideration and to overlook the innovative spirit that has driven Penfolds since its foundation, and continues to find expression in modern times.

If there is anything traditional about Penfolds, it is the practice of constantly reviewing the wines it already does well, and continuously evolving and refining styles as vineyards mature and access to ever older and more varied vineyard sites improves.

Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2010 Kalimna Bin 28 Shiraz presents lovely, expressive blueberry, black raspberry and black cherries notes highlighted by violets, toast, cinnamon stick and touch of mulberries. Full-bodied and rich, the concentrated fruit is framed by medium levels of rounded tannins, crisp acid and a long, classically-styled finish. Approachable now, it will drink to 2020+.
