Mitolo Jester Shiraz 2016 (12 x 750mL) McLaren Vale, SA

Description:

The 2016 vintage in McLaren Vale will be remembered as one of the earliest and most condensed in history thanks largely to a dry and warm growing season. Jester Shiraz fruit is crushed immediately after being delivered to us at the winery. We allow the skin and juice mix to warm naturally over a period of several days, after which it begins fermentation. The ferment is held cool, to retain the bright primary fruit characters which appear in the resulting wine. Following ferment, we carefully press the wine to separate it from the skins. The wine is then transferred into oak barrels (10% new for this vintage) where it stays for eighteen months before bottling.

Expert Reviews

94 POINTS

Estate-grown at the southern end of McLaren Vale near the seaside town of Aldinga, cooled by sea breezes. The crimson-purple colour leads the way for a wine of considerable intensity and length, nimbly stepping around any sledgehammer blows of full-bodied shiraz. Elegance? Yes, but modesty might be a better one-word description, value another. - James Halliday Australian Wine Companion 2019

91 POINTS

A very approachable and medium-bodied shiraz that offers red plums, raspberries and a lightly spicy character. Fresh and flavorsome. Screw cap. Drink now. - James Suckling, 2018

94 POINTS

The wine is instantly appealing on the nose showing black/blueberry, dark plum, chocolate tart, black olive and cedar characters. It is concentrated and plush on the palate, delivering loads of delectable flavours backed by silky texture and supple tannins, leading to a persistent velvety finish. Mouthfilling and very attractive. At its best: now to 2026. AU$25.00. - www.mitolowines.com.au. Aug 2018. Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, August 2018

90 POINTS

Always a crowd-pleaser, the 2016 Jester Shiraz is a medium to full-bodied, creamy-textured beauty for drinking over the next few years. There are just enough savory/meaty notes with good complexity and hints of mint to keep the plush blackberry fruit interesting from nose to finish. - Robert Parker, February 2019

Winery Profile

Brand Profile Image

When the Mitolo family arrived in Australia in the 1950s they brought their viticulturist ancestry and an ethos belonging to the Abruzzo region - forte e gentile or strong and gentle. The family worked hard to become successful market gardeners while staying true to their origins where food and wine, family and friends, laughter and celebration were an integral part of life.

After years of working in his family’s potato business, Frank Mitolo started making wine for family and friends.

In 1999, after a now legendary 5 hour discussion with winemaker Ben Glaetzer, the pair fashioned a dream of making the ultimate expression of McLaren Vale’s rich provenance of soils. They jotted a six word business plan on the back of a napkin: individuality, integrity, quality, purity, elegance and power.

The first Mitolo wine, the 2000 G.A.M. Shiraz was named after Frank’s children Gemma, Alex and Marco. Since then Mitolo have added another 16 wines to the range each with its own distinct personality and story.

The winery works closely with its growers, the Loprestis. The Loprestis, also Italian immigrants and old friends of the Mitolos, have an affinity with their land, producing fruit of the highest quality. The fruit is the essence of Mitolo, with a depth of flavour garnered from heavy clay soils, yet freshness thanks to the gentle afternoon sea breeze. In the winery, Ben takes a ‘hands-off’ approach, fermenting cool to retain purity, and using a range of barrel coopers to generate complexity yet respect and enhance the fruit.

The Mitolo Italian heritage runs strongly through the range using the Italian varieties and techniques. Business meetings are still held over Sunday lunch with traditional Italian food and of course Mitolo wine shared with friends, old and new. And at the heart of it all, in the wine style, in the people, is the motto that the Mitolos brought from Abruzzo - forte a gentile: strong and gentle.
