The 1998 Black Label

The 1998 Black Label saw the teaming of two incredible winemakers - John Glaetzer, the maker of Wolf Blass wines for nearly 30 years, and Caroline Dunn one of the most talented young winemakers in the world. The results speak for themselves, with the 1998 Black Label winning the Jimmy Watson Trophy at the Royal Melbourne Wine Show - a record fourth time for Wolf Blass wines - two further trophies and nine gold medals on the Australian show circuit.

Vintage Report

The 1998 vintage was considered a classic throughout South Australia and growing conditions were perfect in most regions. Yields were above average and quality was outstanding. Some rain fell during vintage but this had no effect on quality. Most red varieties had excellent sugar levels, good natural acids and fantastic colour and flavour profiles. The 1998 Black Label is sourced predominately from old Cabernet Sauvignon vineyards located at the very heart of the Barossa Valley, This Cabernet Sauvignon was then blended with small parcels of Shiraz and Merlot from Langhorne Creek and McLaren Vale to create a wine of depth, complexity and length. Vintage 1998 was considered one of South Australia's finest ever and this wine has such intensity of fruit that the claim of vintage of the decade could not be denied.

"Medium to full red-purple; the bouquet shows the sophisticated use of oak (20 months in French and American) with perfectly ripened cabernet fruit. The palate is rich and impeccably balanced and structured, offering layer-upon-layer of cassis, blackberry and chocolate fruit flavour, sustained by fine tannins. Winner of the Jimmy Watson trophy in 1999, and several trophies at the Barossa Valley Wine Show. An odd double success; the only surprise is it has not won more trophies."

Colour

The wine has a beautiful deep purple colour with a bright crimson hue.

Aroma

On the nose and the palate the wine exhibits sweet peppermint characters with hints of chocolate, plum pudding and liquorice.

Palate

The palate is rich, full bodied and beautifully structured with a wonderful balance of Cabernet tannins and structure filled out with spicy, plush Shiraz fruit. An excellent example of the sum being greater than the parts - with finding the best characters from each variety and region.

Cellaring Potential

Displaying intense fruit in its youth, this wine will soften and mellow with careful cellaring for decades to come.

The 1998 Black Label, our 26th consecutive vintage, is a multiple trophy and gold medal winner and might be our best Black Label yet - it has received unprecedented accolades in its youth but we believe the best is certainly yet to come.

Wolf Blass Wines has grown from a humble tin shed to become one of the world's most successful and awarded wineries.

Wolf Blass was created in 1973 when Wolf started his own business, purchasing a 2.5 acre land holding with an old army shed outside Nuriootpa, at the northern end of the Barossa Valley.

In researching the name Bilyara, Wolf learned it was the Aboriginal name for "Eaglehawk" and given the eagle was also the national emblem of Germany, he decided his wines would carry the Eagle - a legacy that continues today and into the future.

Wolf Blass Wines won three consecutive Jimmy Watson Trophies with Black Label, generating substantial publicity and hype. In 1999, Wolf Blass Black Label made history, becoming the only wine to win the coveted Jimmy Watson Trophy an unprecedented four times.

From this time onwards, growth has been impressive and inspiring with Wolf Blass winning a grand total of more than 3,000 awards at national and international wine shows, including most recently, International Red Winemaker of the Year at the 2008 International Wine Challenge in London.

We take the time to individually inspect each bottle and photograph it so you know exactly what you are buying. All Private Cellar wine stored at GraysOnline is kept in a temperature controlled wine storage area. Any wine that doesn’t meet our quality standards will not be sold.
