Expert Reviews

The outstanding 2002 Shiraz RWT is a 100% Shiraz, single region (Barossa) offering that typically spends 14 months in a combination of two-thirds new and one-third old French oak. Expansive and rich with a broad texture, and a complex nose of white chocolate, raspberries, black cherries, and licorice, this spicy, rich, medium-bodied, elegant 2002 should drink well for 10-12 years.

Rating 93 - Robert Parker, Wine Advocate (OCT/2005)

Winery Tasting Notes

Notes Image

Colour

Deep red with a dark core.

Aroma

A distinctly Barossa nose of dark chocolate, blueberry and a hint of liquorice. Stylish, ‘glossy’, oak provides an appealing bruleed, waxy lift. Such stylish Shiraz fruit and seductive oak instantly invokes aromatic interest.

Palate

Mouthfilling and expansive, yet at the same time contained and tightly structured. The wine is bigger and richer than the cues afforded by the nose, and undeniably assertive and defined. A generously flavoured RWT with dark berried fruits and spice courted by pronounced ripe tannins, culminating in an impressive lingering finish. Layered, long and luscious with excellent aging potential.

Vintage Condition

Regular winter rainfalls ensured ideal soil moisture levels and healthy vine growth. Spring and summer temperatures were amongst the lowest on record, which reduced yield potential, as well as slowing overall crop ripening to a crawl. A warm, dry autumn eventuated, which, combined with careful vineyard management, enabled the grapes to reach ideal ripeness

Wine Background

Penfolds RWT Shiraz presents an admirable alternative to the multi-regional sourcing and American oak maturation that are hallmarks of Grange, expressing instead, single-region Barossa Valley Shiraz matured in French oak barriques.

The initials RWT stand for ‘Red Winemaking Trial’, the name given to the project internally when developmental work began in 1995. RWT Shiraz was launched in May 2000 with the 1997 vintage.

Its style is opulent and fleshy, contrasting with Grange, which is more muscular and assertive. RWT is made from fruit primarily selected for its aromatic qualities and fine texture rather than sheer intensity or power of flavour. The result is a wine that helps to redefine Barossa shiraz at the highest quality level.

Winery Profile

Australia's winemaking history of less than two hundred years is brief by European measures though, like Europe, punctuated by periods of extreme success and difficult times. From the earliest winemaking days Penfolds has figured prominently and few would argue the importance of Penfolds' influence on Australia's winemaking psyche.

Without the influence of Penfolds the modern Australian wine industry would look very different indeed. Sitting comfortably outside of fad and fashion, Penfolds has taken Australian wine to the world on a grand stage and forged a reputation for quality that is without peer.

Penfolds' reputation for making wines of provenance and cellaring potential might suggest a mantle of tradition and formality is the preferred attire of a company with so much history to defend. But to label Penfolds as simply an established and conventional winemaker, would be to confuse tradition with consideration and to overlook the innovative spirit that has driven Penfolds since its foundation, and continues to find expression in modern times.

If there is anything traditional about Penfolds, it is the practice of constantly reviewing the wines it already does well, and continuously evolving and refining styles as vineyards mature and access to ever older and more varied vineyard sites improves.

Deep colour; lots of new French oak on both bouquet and palate, but also plenty of dark fruits; very good mouthfeel and texture, ripe tannins; given the benefit of the oak doubt. Quality cork, but, surprisingly, stained.

Rating 94 - Drink by 2017, James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion (MAR/2005)
