Expert Reviews

95 points, Huon Hooke

At 10 years, this is drinking well and shows every sign of living another 10-15 years. It's in a good place now, with a pleasing balance between primary fruit and matured characters. Perhaps not one of the most complex of the line, though. It's very appealing without being one of the greatest.

Winery Profile

Moss Wood is a premium wine producer located in the Wilyabrup sub region of the Margaret River Wine region of Western Australia. The area is regarded as one of Australia's premium grape growing regions. Since 1984 Clare and Keith Mugford have consistently sought and applied new knowledge and technology to enhance grape and wine quality at Moss Wood.

Moss Wood was established in the Margaret River region, in 1969 by pioneer and visionary Dr Bill Pannell who selected the Wilyabrup property for the suitability of its soils and aspect, his selection is truly one of the finest vineyard sites in Australia. Bill and his wife Sandra’s vision for Moss Wood was to create a purist winery dedicated to the production of site specific fine wines. Clare and Keith Mugford bought the property in 1985.

A paper by viticulturist, Dr John Gladstones, first drew attention to the suitability of the Margaret River region for making wine. Gladstones believed that the soil found in the area, clay subsoil covered by gravelly loam, was ideal for viticulture. He compared the Margaret River climate with that of Bordeaux, indicating that both had an average rainfall of over 1000mms and an absence of temperature extremes, because of the influence of the sea on three sides. One of the first to be influenced by Gladstones' theory was Bill Pannell who spent six months searching the Margaret River area for ideal land for a vineyard. He chose a site at Wilyabrup and persuaded the owner, to sub-divide his land and to sell the block, which became Moss Wood. Bill and Sandra Pannell commenced work on the Moss Wood vineyard in 1969.

For over forty years the unwavering vision for Moss Wood has been that of uncompromising quality, constantly seeking to produce perfect fruit and flawlessly great wine. In an era of corporatisation within the Australian wine industry, Moss Wood has remained a small family run business whose development has been driven by winemaking and viticultural pursuit of excellence, rather than shifting consumer trend.

Over the years fruit from several vineyards, each with their own distinct characters and qualities, has been sourced to produce wines to complement those which come from our vineyard at Moss Wood. Each vineyard produces its own range of wines with no fruit inter-blending between vineyards.

Wines displaying a 5 star designation are recognised as being of proven quality provenance, our team has verified that the wine has been stored correctly from original purchase straight from the winery, documentation, where possible, has been sighted and cellaring conditions have been inspected. This wine generally comes from only the best and most respected of wine collectors in Australia.

★ ★ ★ ★

Wines displaying a 4 star designation have been cellared correctly as verified by the current owners. In general these wines have been purchased from retailers or traders and stored in cellared conditions from original purchase.

★ ★ ★

Wines displaying a 3 star designation are in good condition when we inspect and we are able to confirm some cellaring conditions but we are unable to verify all ownership and storage conditions of their history.

A wine displaying no stars doesn’t mean that there is a problem with the wine, it simply means that we have been unable to verify provenance, however a quality image is always available for the purchaser to make their own purchasing decisions.

Private Cellar wine is wine which has been stored for aging purposes in a Private Cellar.

Storing the wine and allowing it to age has the potential to improve the quality of the wine. While wine is perishable and capable of deteriorating, storing the wine can alter the aroma, colour, mouthfeel and taste of the wine in a way that may be more pleasing to the taster.
