Wine Summary Image

Three generations of Haselgroves and red wine.

Ron Haselgrove OBE born in 1900 spent all his working life with the love of wine. His famous reds from the ‘50’s thru’ to the ‘70’s included the famous Mildara Bin Series of reds blended from the then little known regions of Coonawarra, McLaren Vale and Hunter Valley. And in 1963 he made the first Mildara Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon which became famously known as “Peppermint Patty” due to its characteristic aroma; and its sheer quality which led it to become known as one of Australia’s Icon wines.

James, Ron’s second son born in 1943, worked at Mildara Coonawarra in the ‘70’s under the tutelage of Ron, and learnt the craft of making fine red wine. Knowing Ron’s love of the McLaren Vale wine region, in the early ‘80’s James moved to McLaren Vale with family in tow. And what better area than McLaren Vale to produce a wine to follow the ground breaking Mildara reds. James set about making a big red, full of flavour and fruit but in careful balance with wood maturation in small oak. And to make it affordable to all, the concept of the Futures Shiraz was born. It was both a wine for the future – designed to age many years, but also an en primeur payment system made the wine available for dedicated wine drinkers to buy the wine in advance of bottling, first bottling was in 1981.

Nick, James’ son has had a love of wine, since his early years. Born in 1967, he made his first wine, with help of Dad in 1971, a Coonawarra Gewurtstraminer, only a few dozen, but it stood the test and was more than drinkable some years after.

Nick attended Roseworthy College and studied Oenology and graduated in 1990, and started his wine career with James Haselgrove Wines. In that year he took on the responsibility for making the Futures Shiraz and in 1993 won the title of McLaren Vale Bushing King with the 1992 wine – the best wine in the McLaren Vale Wine Show.

New owners of the business took over in 1992, and the Futures concept didn’t continue beyond 1994 under the new proprietors.

Winery Profile

The name Haselgrove has been synonymous with Australian wine for over 100 years.

Haselgrove is one of the old names of McLaren Vale and under new ownership it has set about returning the winery to its former glory.

Senior Winemaker Greg Clack has stamped a quality wine ethos in his team with the first and foremost goal to provide outstanding quality in all of Haselgrove wines. Steps have already been taken to up-grade the winery with equipment to better handle small batch winemaking.

We are in the process of expanding our barrel storage including the addition of a cool room for white barrel ferments.

The new owners of Haselgrove are all highly experienced wine men, they bring the passion of their Italian heritage and a desire to re-establish Haselgrove as a premium wine producer from McLaren Vale.

In Essence – Haselgrove Wines are taking a fresh, modern approach to winemaking, producing a range of wines that show distinct regional character, are well balanced and can be enjoyed by themselves or with a wide array of Australia's excellent fresh foods.

  • The history of the ownership of an object, especially when documented or authenticated. Used for Artworks, Antiques, and Wine.
  • The records or documents authenticating such an object or the history of its ownership.

Whenever you buy wine there is an inherent risk, as wine is a perishable good regardless of whether it is sealed under cork or screwcap. At GraysOnline we minimise the risk to you by providing as much information as possible regarding the provenance of the wine we sell.

We take the time to individually inspect each bottle and photograph it so you know exactly what you are buying. All Private Cellar wine stored at GraysOnline is kept in a temperature controlled wine storage area. Any wine that doesn’t meet our quality standards will not be sold.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★

Wines displaying a 5 star designation are recognised as being of proven quality provenance, our team has verified that the wine has been stored correctly from original purchase straight from the winery, documentation, where possible, has been sighted and cellaring conditions have been inspected. This wine generally comes from only the best and most respected of wine collectors in Australia.

★ ★ ★ ★

Wines displaying a 4 star designation have been cellared correctly as verified by the current owners. In general these wines have been purchased from retailers or traders and stored in cellared conditions from original purchase.

★ ★ ★

Wines displaying a 3 star designation are in good condition when we inspect and we are able to confirm some cellaring conditions but we are unable to verify all ownership and storage conditions of their history.

A wine displaying no stars doesn’t mean that there is a problem with the wine, it simply means that we have been unable to verify provenance, however a quality image is always available for the purchaser to make their own purchasing decisions.

Private Cellar wine is wine which has been stored for aging purposes in a Private Cellar.

Storing the wine and allowing it to age has the potential to improve the quality of the wine. While wine is perishable and capable of deteriorating, storing the wine can alter the aroma, colour, mouthfeel and taste of the wine in a way that may be more pleasing to the taster.
