Expert Reviews

Composed of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 24% Merlot, 17% Cabernet Franc and small proportions of Malbec and Petit Verdot, the 2006 Quintet spent 22 months in barrel, 30% of which was large format and just 30% new oak. Winemaker Rob Hall explained that John Middleton liked this wine to come in at around 12.5% alcohol if at all possible and of course it can be a challenge to get phenolics ripe at this level of lightness. But if anyone can do it in this area, Mount Mary can; this vintage came in at a modest 12.9%. Deep garnet in color, this wine has restrained aromas of cassis, dried Mediterranean herbs, graphite and loam plus pinches of cardamom and cloves. Light to medium-bodied with high acid and medium-firm finely grained tannins, this wine finishes very long. It’s still a little tight knit and needs 2-3 years to open, thereafter evolving through the next 8-10 years and keeping to 2024+. If this caliber of grapes were produced in Bordeaux they would have chaptilised and put a lot more oak on it, blurring this wonderful expression of the land...shame about the filtration though, particularly on such a delicate wine!- The Wine Advocate

Winery Tasting Notes

Notes Image

The **Mount Mary Vineyard Quintet 2006** is a classic Bordeaux-style blend from the Yarra Valley, Australia. It showcases a deep, rich color with complex aromas of ripe blackberries, cassis, and subtle oak spice. On the palate, it's full-bodied with layers of dark fruit, leather, and fine tannins, offering a smooth yet structured mouthfeel. The wine has a long, elegant finish, with hints of tobacco and earthy nuances. It's a well-balanced wine that has aged gracefully, showing both power and finesse. A solid choice for lovers of mature, structured reds.

Winery Profile

Mount Mary Vineyard is a family owned, single vineyard estate located in the heart of the Yarra Valley which lies in the south-eastern corner of Australia. Established in 1971 by Dr. John and Marli Middleton, Mount Mary was one of the first vineyards planted in the resurgence of the Yarra Valley as a premium grape growing region.

In 1971 that John and Marli stumbled upon the property known as “Mount Mary”. The site had, surprisingly, never been planted with vines yet they immediately recognised the gentle north facing slope and soil as being ideal for their purpose. The first vines were planted in 1972 and today we have some 30 acres under vine, all of varying age and varieties.

From the 10 grape varieties planted in the vineyard, we produce four wines, two whites and two reds. The first of our whites is a Bordeaux blend of Sauvignon blanc/Semillon and Muscadelle we named “Triolet”. The other is the well known “Chardonnay” of Burgundy. Similarly, in our reds we produce a Bordeaux Cabernet blend (Sauvignon/Franc/Merlot/Malbec/Petit verdot) which we call “Quintet” and the burgundian “Pinot noir”.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★

Wines displaying a 5 star designation are recognised as being of proven quality provenance, our team has verified that the wine has been stored correctly from original purchase straight from the winery, documentation, where possible, has been sighted and cellaring conditions have been inspected. This wine generally comes from only the best and most respected of wine collectors in Australia.

★ ★ ★ ★

Wines displaying a 4 star designation have been cellared correctly as verified by the current owners. In general these wines have been purchased from retailers or traders and stored in cellared conditions from original purchase.

★ ★ ★

Wines displaying a 3 star designation are in good condition when we inspect and we are able to confirm some cellaring conditions but we are unable to verify all ownership and storage conditions of their history.

A wine displaying no stars doesn’t mean that there is a problem with the wine, it simply means that we have been unable to verify provenance, however a quality image is always available for the purchaser to make their own purchasing decisions.

Private Cellar wine is wine which has been stored for aging purposes in a Private Cellar.

Storing the wine and allowing it to age has the potential to improve the quality of the wine. While wine is perishable and capable of deteriorating, storing the wine can alter the aroma, colour, mouthfeel and taste of the wine in a way that may be more pleasing to the taster.
