Wine Summary Image

First released in 1984, the Elderton Command Shiraz has established a reputation as one of the Barossa’s icon wines sitting alongside the likes of Grant Burge Meshach, Henschke Mount Edelstone, Yalumba Octavius, E&E Blackpepper and Glaetzer Amon Ra. Vintage after vintage it has received high praise from critics around the world including Robert Parker and Wine Spectator magazine.

Fruit for the wine is sourced from vines planted in the early 1900’s with yields of less than 4 tonnes per hectare. The wine is matured in a combination of new American and French oak for approximately 12 months and then transferred into older oak for a further 12 months. The wine is then given a further 12 months bottle age before being released.

Winery Tasting Notes

Notes Image

Totally opaque black crimson colour with crimson hue. Superb perfumed top note with vanilla, blackberry, dark chocolate and spice. The palate is exotic, with flavours of plum, vanilla and liquorice totally filling the palate. In the background layers of clove, dark chocolate and vanilla emerge, followed by liquorice and liquorice allsorts. Very strong, spicy vanilla, clove and plum aftertaste.

Winery Profile

Elderton Wines is a small, family owned and operated winery, situated in the heart of the Barossa Valley. The Elderton vineyard, which was planted in 1894 by the Scholz family, was purchased by the Ashmead family in the late 1970's and started producing labelled bottled estate wine from the 1982 harvest.

It was well after a decade of hard work and toil that the winery shot to prominence in the early 1990's, after winning the prestigious Jimmy Watson Trophy at the 1993 Melbourne Wine Show. There has been an amazing amount of further wine show success including the World’s Best Shiraz Trophy at the 2000 London International Wine & Spirits Competition. Elderton has also enjoyed being the darling of the worlds wine press, with great endorsements given by James Halliday, Robert Parker, The Wine Spectator Magazine as well as countless others. Furthermore, in 2005, Elderton was named in the Top 100 Wineries in the World by Wine & Spirit Magazine.

The real strength behind the Elderton success is the ancient 72 acre Barossa Floor Vineyard, which produces fruit of the highest quality year in year out. Each block on the property is cherished but the two standouts are the Command Shiraz block (planted 1894) and the Ashmead Cabernet Sauvignon block (planted 1944).

The wines of Elderton are enjoyed worldwide for their amazing qualities which come through from varietal character, regional definition and the unique and robust personalities of the Elderton team. In 2011, Elderton celebrated its 30th vintage as a winery and the Ashmeads still believe that the best is yet to come.

Whenever you buy wine there is an inherent risk, as wine is a perishable good regardless of whether it is sealed under cork or screwcap. At GraysOnline we minimise the risk to you by providing as much information as possible regarding the provenance of the wine we sell.

We take the time to individually inspect each bottle and photograph it so you know exactly what you are buying. All Private Cellar wine stored at GraysOnline is kept in a temperature controlled wine storage area. Any wine that doesn’t meet our quality standards will not be sold.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★

Wines displaying a 5 star designation are recognised as being of proven quality provenance, our team has verified that the wine has been stored correctly from original purchase straight from the winery, documentation, where possible, has been sighted and cellaring conditions have been inspected. This wine generally comes from only the best and most respected of wine collectors in Australia.

★ ★ ★ ★

Wines displaying a 4 star designation have been cellared correctly as verified by the current owners. In general these wines have been purchased from retailers or traders and stored in cellared conditions from original purchase.

★ ★ ★

Wines displaying a 3 star designation are in good condition when we inspect and we are able to confirm some cellaring conditions but we are unable to verify all ownership and storage conditions of their history.

A wine displaying no stars doesn’t mean that there is a problem with the wine, it simply means that we have been unable to verify provenance, however a quality image is always available for the purchaser to make their own purchasing decisions.

Private Cellar wine is wine which has been stored for aging purposes in a Private Cellar.

Storing the wine and allowing it to age has the potential to improve the quality of the wine. While wine is perishable and capable of deteriorating, storing the wine can alter the aroma, colour, mouthfeel and taste of the wine in a way that may be more pleasing to the taster.
