Wine Summary Image

Created in 1962, Penfolds Bin 128 is a regional wine that reflects the unique climate and growing conditions of South Australia's Coonawarra district and the relatively elegant style of coolclimate Shiraz. From the 1980 vintage, French oak replaced American, highlighting the pepper, spice and floral characteristics that define this style. Since the mid-1980s, a greater attention has been paid to fruit ripeness, resulting in a wine that is fuller in style and structure.

"A textbook example of a cool-climate Shiraz from a warm year. Flavours & structure genetically aligned to its source - Coonawarra." Penfolds Chief Winemaker - Peter Gago.

Expert Reviews

Strong colour; black fruit aromas have a caress of oak; the medium-bodied palate opens up to cherry, plum and blackberry fruits with precisely judged oak and tannin support; a long future.

Rating 93 - Drink by 2023 - James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion (MAR/2010)

Winery Tasting Notes

Notes Image

Colour

Deep dark purple.

Aroma

An initial rush of green tobacco, parsley & bouquet garni with a waft of red liquorice. Fresh fruits abound - mulberry, the most obvious. Upon a swirl, cedar, spice and a flirt of toasted marshmallow. With air, the generosity and sweetness of fruit is shyly revealed.

Palate

Rhubarb and berried fruits to the fore and at the other end - a kick off the back-palate of crushed black pepper. Not forgetting the mid-palate - wonderfully integrated oak & spice and a 360- degree propulsion of graphite-like tannins. Cola and black olive flavours descend with an exuberant swirl - reflective of this wine's youth...

Cellaring

2010 to 2025.

Food Matching

Lamb backstrap seasoned with Moroccan herbs and spices.

Winery Profile

Australia's winemaking history of less than two hundred years is brief by European measures though, like Europe, punctuated by periods of extreme success and difficult times. From the earliest winemaking days Penfolds has figured prominently and few would argue the importance of Penfolds' influence on Australia's winemaking psyche.

Without the influence of Penfolds the modern Australian wine industry would look very different indeed. Sitting comfortably outside of fad and fashion, Penfolds has taken Australian wine to the world on a grand stage and forged a reputation for quality that is without peer.

Penfolds' reputation for making wines of provenance and cellaring potential might suggest a mantle of tradition and formality is the preferred attire of a company with so much history to defend. But to label Penfolds as simply an established and conventional winemaker, would be to confuse tradition with consideration and to overlook the innovative spirit that has driven Penfolds since its foundation, and continues to find expression in modern times.

If there is anything traditional about Penfolds, it is the practice of constantly reviewing the wines it already does well, and continuously evolving and refining styles as vineyards mature and access to ever older and more varied vineyard sites improves.

I like the varietal and regional roots of this wine. It certainly shines in each direction from the first pour and takes you to nice interesting places as you go along. Cool mint menthol alpine on one level, ripeness elegant spicy pepperiness on another. Good oak, youthful melded well with the fruit, taking it and making it long and far on the finish. Very respectable drinking and there for the long haul as well.

Rating 91 - Paul Ippolito, www.paulippolito.com.au (24/JUL/2013)

The 2008 Bin 128 Shiraz was aged 12 months in French hogsheads, 26% new. Very deep garnet-purple in color, it has pronounced spiced meat notes over warm blackberry, blueberry pie filling, mincemeat, black and green peppercorns and a little tar. Full and very tight in the mouth, it gives firm chewy tannins, crisp acid and a long finish. Consider giving this one another year in bottle and drink it 2012 to 2018+.

With a lot of changes happening around the Foster’s Group, it is business as usual at Penfolds…which seems to operate within its own world. But this is no small world. The vineyard holdings here are vast and the connections with growers go back generations. Chief winemaker Peter Gago is the very well spoken front-man for the production team backed-up Kym Schroeter in charge of the whites and Steve Lienert crafting some very fine, consistent and sometimes inspired reds. If Champagne is all about the art of blending, then Penfolds is the Champagne of Australian wine. Those that think large companies producing wines that emphasize blending can’t make great wines need to think about the Champagne model or simply try some of Penfolds top wines to become believers. That said – check out their recent single vineyard release: the very special 2004 Block 42 Kalimna Cabernet Sauvignon, the first release of a wine made purely from this 100+ year old single block (perhaps the oldest block of Cabernet in the world?) since 1996.
