Wine Summary Image

An outstanding example of the Moss Wood style that will rank among its best releases. Brilliant, deep colour with a seductive aroma of redcurrant and violets with deeper mulberry nuances liberally spiced. The palate is dark and dense but with typical Moss Wood softness and generosity. Ripe tannins and rich fruit concentrate. Don’t touch it for 10 years.”Ray Jordan reviews the Moss Wood 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon

Expert Reviews

Positive red-purple colour; in the mainstream of Moss Wood style: supple, round and impeccably balanced, yet with regal cabernet expression. Small wonder that Moss Wood has one of the most loyal mail/email lists in Australia, and this release will please its followers as much as any prior year. Rating 95 - Drink by 2029 James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion (MAY/2012)

Winery Tasting Notes

Colour and condition

Deep brick red; bright condition

Aroma

Initially the nose is slightly closed, presenting a complex combination of red currant, tar and leather. After a few minutes breathing, the fruit aromas lift, adding mulberry and violets. In the background there is a scented oak lift of toast and black pepper-like spice. A classic “small-crop” Moss Wood Cabernet Sauvignon.

Palate

The theme of the palate is concentration and generosity. Ripe red currant flavours combine with some earthy flavours and fill the front and mid-palate. These sit over full body and excellent viscosity, the product of ripe, concentrated tannins, from both fruit and oak. These give the wine considerable length, leading to a finish of dusty, toasty oak.

Cellaring

Our experience with the wines from low yielding years is that their aging is much slower. While the 2009 has terrific red and dark fruit depth, making it well balanced enough to drink now, it is certainly a “keeper”. On this basis, we are still happy that it will develop along the lines of the Edmond Penning-Rowsell benchmark and will need 10 years minimum cellaring to shows the beginning of its bottle-age characters. However, using the 1981 vintage as our guide, we expect that it will need 20 years cellaring to show a predominance of these notes. We quickly add that we do not expect the ’09 to be as tight and slow-developing as the ’81 because the crop level was higher. In 1981 the vineyard produced a mighty 3.87 tonnes per hectare, making the 5.81 tonnes per hectare of the younger wine seem positively bountiful!

Winery Profile

The combination of site, vineyard management and soil conservation has been the key to fruit quality. Since the 1996 vintage, the perfumed and finely structured with cassis-blackcurrant aromas, hints of cedar and violet. The oak and fruit are very neatly balanced. With proven ageing potential it develops earth, demi-glace and briar characters on the bouquet, and complexity and suppleness on the palate.

Another utterly superb Moss Wood Cabernet Sauvignon. This year's blend includes 8% Petit Verdot and 4% Cabernet Franc. Keith truly is a master of his craft. Still firmly in its infancy this fantastically impressive offering combines power with extreme finesse and sheer beauty. The sublime use of quality oak lends a subtle, supportive note of toasted spice. The heady, wonderfully ripe cassis and blackberry fruit is majestically framed by seductively ripe, shapely tannins that caress the palate right through to the ever so persistent finale. Deep, complex and sophisticated with no one element out of kilter. However, patience will be rewarded. Drink 2014-2025+ Neil Sommerfelt MW

"I’VE been a long-time fan of Keith and Clare Mugford’s Margaret River reds and selected the Moss Wood 2007 Moss Wood Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon as my 2010 cabernet sauvignon of the year.

This one is in the same multi-faceted, sophisticated mode, with purple-tinged brick red colours and mulberry and bouquet garni scents. The front of the palate delivers spiced blackberry flavour, followed up on the middle palate by elements of loganberries, spearmint, Turkish delight chocolate and vanillin oak.

Dusty tannins hold sway at the finish." DRINK WITH: barbecued duck and balsamic vinegar dressing AGEING: 12 years RATING: 5 stars John Lewis
