Wine Summary Image

This wine displays an intriguing nose with a lovely development beginning to evolve. The wine is quite full bodied with excellent balance provided by quite dry tannins on the long finish.

Last tasted: 6th of October 2009

Opened for a visit by our Russian agent Fort Ltd and 12 of their customers visiting Australia. This wine was tasted alongside the 2008, 2006 and 2002 Eclipse in a mini vertical tasting for the group.

Expert Reviews

Rating 97 - Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Advocate #211, Feb 2014

A Grenache and Shiraz blend, the medium garnet colored 2004 Eclipse presents a lovely Grenache perfume of raspberry preserves, dried cherries, licorice, pepper and some chocolate. Full-bodied, rich and seductive, it still has tons of concentrated fruit married to a medium level of grainy tannins and a long finish. Drink it now to 2024+.

Winery Tasting Notes

Notes Image

Varietal Composition: Grenache (McV) 66% and Shiraz (LC) 34%.

Last tasted: 15 June 2015

Medium-deep red in colour with a touch of brick in the hue-youthful looking for its age.

Attractive nose of sweet red and black berries, with some undergrowth and black pepper/spice notes.

Nice smooth palate texture, showing good depth of flavour and balance. Not as big as the 2003; a refined Eclipse from a more gentle vintage.

Optimum drinking time: best now to 2020

Winery Profile

Noon Winery is a small family-owned business mainly specialising in full-bodied reds from McLaren Vale and Langhorne Creek. Its Reserve Shiraz had achieved very high ratings from Robert M Parker. Noon Winery does not produce any white wines though they do make a dry Rose.Drew Noon is one of the only 18 people in Australia to become a Master of Wine - which he undertook in order to learn more about the wines of the world and winemaking. Noon loves what he does: he relishes the personal effort, along with that of family and friends, at every stage of the production process. Increased production is not an aim, for the sake of ensuring ongoing quality.Noon is a small-batch maker with 5.7 hectares of estate vineyard: 4.2 hectares of bush vine grenache planted in 1934 and 1943 and 1.5 hectares of mainly graciano planted in 1999. Noon maintains the relationship with the Borrett family of Langhorne Creek established by his father in the 1960s, sourcing grapes from their 1.6-hectare "20 Rows" shiraz block (planted in 1962) and the 1.2-hectare "Fruit Trees" cabernet block (1972).

Rating 94 - Robert Parker, Wine Advocate #167, Oct 2006.

A blend of 65% Grenache and 35% Shiraz from 34- to 60-year-old vines, the 2004 Eclipse reveals wonderful notes of licorice, blueberries, black raspberries, and cassis. Possessing incredible elegance and finesse yet substantial in size and majestic in texture, this sensational Aussie red should drink well for 10-12 years, possibly longer.

This estate’s brilliant owners/winemakers, Drew and Rae Noon, are meticulous about everything, including what happens at the vineyards where they contract for fruit. The results are some of the most precise, full-bodied yet remarkably vibrant wines produced in Australia. Drink: 2006 - 2018

Last tasted : 11th of April 2011 - Food match when last tasted: Coq au vin

Opened during a late dinner with our Alaskan visitor and harvest helper, Keith Hoffmann who also brought to the table a bottle of Chateauneuf du Pape 2007 Domaine de la Janasse and 2007 Domaine Charvin, both of which were absolutely outstanding wines.

Tasted again the following night: We found this wine to be even more open and relaxed with 24 hours breathing. A big, rich mouthful. Excellent.
