Wine Background

Penfolds RWT Shiraz is an understudy to Grange, expressing Barossa Valley Shiraz in combination with French oak. The initials RWT stand for ‘Red Winemaking Trial’, the name given to the wine internally when developmental work began on it in 1995.

RWT Shiraz was launched in May 2000 with the 1997 vintage. Its style is opulent and rich, contrasting with Grange, which is more muscular. RWT is made from fruit selected for its aromatic qualities and fine texture rather than sheer intensity or power of flavour. The result is a wine that helps to define Barossa Shiraz at the highest quality level. Packaged in laser-etched bottles.

Expert Reviews

1998 was the 2nd vintage produced of the RWT (standing for Red Winemaking Trial). It offers an evolved, earthy, tobacco and forest floor nose over notes of warm black berries and dried mint. Full bodied, there's a great combination of berry-laced and savory flavor in the mouth supported by firm fine-grained tannins and crisp acid, finishing long.

Rating 93 - Lisa Perrotti-Brown, In Asia (JAN/2012)

Medium to full red-purple; the powerful, rich and complex bouquet offers ripe fruit and lots of oak. The deep, strongly structured palate has the abundant fruit the bouquet promised, but the overall impact of the oak and tannin extract needs time to settle down.

Rating 90 - James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion (SEP/2001)

Winery Tasting Notes

Notes Image

Colour

Deep crimson red.

Aroma

Rich, saturated, Christmas pudding-like fruit and stylish French oak are immediately obvious, followed by more subtle aromas of dried glace fruits and underlying dark liquorice and prune.

Palate

A sleek, luscious Barossa Valley Shiraz in which a core of blueberry fruit and ripe tannins contribute to phenomenal length of flavour. There is also a refined, luxurious, praline-like flavour and texture. Still very youthful, with oak more integrated on the palate than the nose, indicating a great cellaring future. A modern Penfolds classic that is at once both sophisticated and hedonistic.

Winery Profile

Australia's winemaking history of less than two hundred years is brief by European measures though, like Europe, punctuated by periods of extreme success and difficult times. From the earliest winemaking days Penfolds has figured prominently and few would argue the importance of Penfolds' influence on Australia's winemaking psyche.

Without the influence of Penfolds the modern Australian wine industry would look very different indeed. Sitting comfortably outside of fad and fashion, Penfolds has taken Australian wine to the world on a grand stage and forged a reputation for quality that is without peer.

Penfolds' reputation for making wines of provenance and cellaring potential might suggest a mantle of tradition and formality is the preferred attire of a company with so much history to defend. But to label Penfolds as simply an established and conventional winemaker, would be to confuse tradition with consideration and to overlook the innovative spirit that has driven Penfolds since its foundation, and continues to find expression in modern times.

If there is anything traditional about Penfolds, it is the practice of constantly reviewing the wines it already does well, and continuously evolving and refining styles as vineyards mature and access to ever older and more varied vineyard sites improves.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★

Wines displaying a 5 star designation are recognised as being of proven quality provenance, our team has verified that the wine has been stored correctly from original purchase straight from the winery, documentation, where possible, has been sighted and cellaring conditions have been inspected. This wine generally comes from only the best and most respected of wine collectors in Australia.

★ ★ ★ ★

Wines displaying a 4 star designation have been cellared correctly as verified by the current owners. In general these wines have been purchased from retailers or traders and stored in cellared conditions from original purchase.

★ ★ ★

Wines displaying a 3 star designation are in good condition when we inspect and we are able to confirm some cellaring conditions but we are unable to verify all ownership and storage conditions of their history.

A wine displaying no stars doesn’t mean that there is a problem with the wine, it simply means that we have been unable to verify provenance, however a quality image is always available for the purchaser to make their own purchasing decisions.

Private Cellar wine is wine which has been stored for aging purposes in a Private Cellar.

Storing the wine and allowing it to age has the potential to improve the quality of the wine. While wine is perishable and capable of deteriorating, storing the wine can alter the aroma, colour, mouthfeel and taste of the wine in a way that may be more pleasing to the taster.
