La Cave D'Augustin Florent Cahors Rouge AOC Malbec 2019 (6 x 750mL), France

Description:

The fortunes of Cahors have waxed and waned for centuries. In the Middle Ages, when Cahors’ wine was accessible to England, they were well-regarded. The decimating one-two punch of the Hundred Years War and phylloxera changed these fortunes. Yet in good times and bad, Cahors is a region whose reputation has always hung on a single variety: one locally known as Côt or Auxerrois but most commonly known worldwide as Malbec. Until recently, the wines were so dark and tannic they earned the label “the black wine of Cahors.” However, there’s a contemporary movement away from that style that’s sparking a regional revival.

The new trend behind the upswing is fuelled by less obviously tannic wines achieved through extended maceration and blending with Merlot. There are some differences in age ability versus youthful consumption with these creations. These variances depend on whether the vineyards are planted on the terraced slopes or on the thin-soiled plateau. The best producers aim to showcase both attributes.

Winery Tasting Notes

Notes Image

Tasting Notes:

Deep red ruby colour. Rich smooth and velvety. With powerful cherry nose and spices. A truly delicious wine. Goes well with beef, red pasta, Chicken lamb, Kangaroo a real match here and most game or just with a tee bone off the barbie.

Rich smooth and velvety. . A truly delicious wine from the South west of France., This wine with all it's dark fruit favours pairs perfectly with grilled meats, and steak..

This is a very good example of how producers nowadays are managing to reconcile real Cahors character when young.

Food Pairing:

Malbec calls for full-flavored foods like steak, lamb, game, and can also work with dark poultry, pork, and sausages. Earthy ingredients like mushrooms, shallots, sage, rosemary, mint, and cumin can bring out the fruity elements in the wine.
