Wine Summary Image

A cooler than average year, with high rainfall at the start of the growing season, promoting strong canopy growth. Conditions became more favourable toward flowering resulting in a solid crop set. The season remained cool through to harvest, producing fruit with a high natural acidity and elegant flavours. 2004 season wines exhibit finesse and longevity that has retained remarkable freshness at market release and will continue to evolve under cork.

Meticulously sourced from pristine fruit grown in icon vineyards throughout Tasmania, this wine was made utilising winemaking methods of the highest degree, including whole bunch pressing, primary fermentation on light grape solids & 100% malolactic fermentation of base wines to add sophistication and structure. The wine has then been nurtured over 14 years to achieve this exemplary wine style.

Expert Reviews

Well done for putting this price on it. What 15yo Australian table wine at the peak of its powers could offer as much complexity and perfection as this? The balance is perfect. - James Halliday

Winery Tasting Notes

Notes Image

A true prestige cuvée based on attributes of pristine Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from the finest Tasmanian vineyards. Medium straw in colour with a bright, green/gold lustre, with a fine persistent bead and mousse. Aromas of sea spray, grapefruit, butter biscuit and candle wax meld together in this remarkably complex and yet bright wine. A wine of great sophistication, exhibiting flavours reminiscent of citrus pith, fresh oyster shell, nougat and truffle oil. Low dosage brings this wine well into the ‘Extra Brut’ range resulting in exceptional poise

and tension. The vibrant palate is crafted around a great acid line, sugar and tannin balance with exceptionally persistent flavour. The wine retains a brilliant freshness and vibrancy - the hallmark of the House of Arras style.

Winery Profile

For more than a decade, the House of Arras team has been identifying and developing the ideal vineyard sites for world class sparkling wine. This journey has led the House of Arras to call the ancient soils and cold climate of Tasmania home. Its climate is significantly cooler than the mainland, with long summer daylight and maritime influences, which are Ideal conditions for long, slow and consistent fruit development. The House of Arras sources fruit from many outstanding vineyards in southern Tasmania and the south east coast. Each location bestows its own nuances of character on chardonnay and pinot noir fruit.

Winemaker Ed Carr

Ed Carr, House of Arras master winemaker, is Australia’s most awarded sparkling winemaker. He has long held the belief that Tasmania can, and should, produce exceptional sparkling wines equal to the world's best. Over the past 20 years Ed Carr has amassed more than 100 trophies in Australian wine shows including 21 consecutive "Best Sparkling White Wine of Show" trophies at capital city wine shows. However, a world class sparkling wine can only be crafted with the finest fruit and the House of Arras viticultural team carefully nurtures the House of Arras vineyards through the vagaries of each and every growing season. Only the very best parcels of Tasmanian chardonnay and pinot noir are selected for House of Arras, carefully handled in separate batches and made into wine each vintage before being blended and left to mature and develop their own special nuances over many years.

Art of Blending

The art of blending sparkling wine is one that can only be mastered with years of experience. Many individual parcels are woven together to create the final blend, each bringing its own profound character to the complete wine. The world's leading sparkling wines require time to develop complexity and character. Part of Ed Carr's long term vision for the House of Arras was to release a single vintage wine with a minimum of 8 years tirage age. This vision is now realised as the House of Arras takes the next step in its journey.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★

Wines displaying a 5 star designation are recognised as being of proven quality provenance, our team has verified that the wine has been stored correctly from original purchase straight from the winery, documentation, where possible, has been sighted and cellaring conditions have been inspected. This wine generally comes from only the best and most respected of wine collectors in Australia.

★ ★ ★ ★

Wines displaying a 4 star designation have been cellared correctly as verified by the current owners. In general these wines have been purchased from retailers or traders and stored in cellared conditions from original purchase.

★ ★ ★

Wines displaying a 3 star designation are in good condition when we inspect and we are able to confirm some cellaring conditions but we are unable to verify all ownership and storage conditions of their history.

A wine displaying no stars doesn’t mean that there is a problem with the wine, it simply means that we have been unable to verify provenance, however a quality image is always available for the purchaser to make their own purchasing decisions.

Private Cellar wine is wine which has been stored for aging purposes in a Private Cellar.

Storing the wine and allowing it to age has the potential to improve the quality of the wine. While wine is perishable and capable of deteriorating, storing the wine can alter the aroma, colour, mouthfeel and taste of the wine in a way that may be more pleasing to the taster.
