Vinification

Part vinomatic and part open top 2-4 tonne fermenters. The latter plunged two times per day. After 5 days, pressed off, with malolactic fermentation conducted in tank. The wine then went into 100% French oak made up of 25% puncheons and overall 25% new oak. The Shiraz grapes are sourced solely from the Graveyard Vineyard, being clonal vines planted through the 90s and massale selection from the 1968 plantings, with the oldest at 10 years of age.

Winemaker Comments

The Hunter Valley enjoyed another stress-free vintage in 2018. Low rainfall throughout 2017 meant low foliage and the harvest was saved by 210mm of rain over November to December 2017. Picking Shiraz commenced on 28th January and completed in 2 weeks after a very hot end to January. The second of what has turned out to be three great vintages - 2017, 2018, 2019. Debate will continue about the ‘17 versus ‘18, both have their own magic; some people will support the solid fruit/ tannin nature of the ‘17 while others the finesse of 2018.

Expert Reviews

James Halliday

91 Points

An archetypal Hunter Valley shiraz: medium-bodied with predominantly earthy/black fruits peppered by fine tannins that underwrite the cellaring certainty of a pure-bred wine.

Winery Tasting Notes

Notes Image

Aroma

Lifted aromas of red fruit and ginger spice. While there is some oak, it is very much in the background.

Palate

Soft entry on the palate, fine tannins and perfect acid carry through to the finish. A typical medium bodied Hunter Valley Shiraz that will give drinking pleasure now and over the long term.

Winery Profile

At nearly 40 years young, Brokenwood Wines, in the heart of the Hunter Valley, can lay claim to not only an iconic vineyard with the Graveyard Vineyard but to the preservation of a wine fraternity that proudly has as its mission statement, 'to make great wine and have fun'.

The original land that was to become the Cricket Pitch Vineyard was purchased in 1970 and planted immediately to Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon. The Graveyard Vineyard, planted to Shiraz in 1968, was bought in 1978 and by the mid 1980s was producing a premium Single Vineyard wine. The first Langton's Classification of Premium Australian Wine was launched in 1993 and the Graveyard Shiraz was then, and remains, the highest-placed Hunter Valley Shiraz.

The Hunter Valley is renowned for its dry table wines of Semillon and Shiraz. Brokenwood's production of these is further supported by premium grapes from as far afield as Orange, Beechworth and McLaren Vale.

Today, Brokenwood boasts an impressive array of premium quality wines, sourced from 'all the right regions, for all the right reasons', from the Graveyard Shiraz to the Cricket Pitch Sauvignon Blanc Semillon and Cricket Pitch Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot.

“Our philosophy is to produce wine that focuses on the unique regional characteristics of the Hunter Valley and premium wine regions throughout Australia.” Iain Riggs, Chief Winemaker & Managing Director, Brokenwood Wines.
