Top Vintage

Bin 389 combines the elegance of Cabernet Sauvignon with the richness of Shiraz and demonstrates the traditional Penfolds' trademark - perfect balance between fruit and oak, to produce a wine with rich varietal characters and cellaring potential.

The long Indian summer and late season in 1994 produced good quality Cabernet and Shiraz in South Australia. Carefully selected premium quality fruit together with 16 months in American oak have produced a classic wine in the traditional Bin 389 style.

Expert Reviews

"Medium to full red-purple; solidly ripe fruit on the bouquet is balanced by pronounced vanillin oak; the palate is equivalently powerful and concentrated, with dark fruit and dark chocolate flavours; the structure is particularly good, with tannins running through from the middle to the finish."

Rating 93 Drink 2009 - James Halliday, Wine Companion - Date Tasted Apr 97

Winery Tasting Notes

Notes Image

Colour

Deep red.

Aroma

Dark chocolate, plummy, loamy aromas with some demi-glace, mint notes.

Palate

The palate is well focused with lovely strength and density of fruit. There are still some primary blackberry characters intertwined with evolved chocolaty, meaty demi-glace fruit and savoury, malty oak. It finished with pronounced sappy firmness. Very strong, muscular wine with plenty of fruit volume.

Winery Profile

Australia's winemaking history of less than two hundred years is brief by European measures though, like Europe, punctuated by periods of extreme success and difficult times. From the earliest winemaking days Penfolds has figured prominently and few would argue the importance of Penfolds' influence on Australia's winemaking psyche.

Without the influence of Penfolds the modern Australian wine industry would look very different indeed. Sitting comfortably outside of fad and fashion, Penfolds has taken Australian wine to the world on a grand stage and forged a reputation for quality that is without peer.

Penfolds' reputation for making wines of provenance and cellaring potential might suggest a mantle of tradition and formality is the preferred attire of a company with so much history to defend. But to label Penfolds as simply an established and conventional winemaker, would be to confuse tradition with consideration and to overlook the innovative spirit that has driven Penfolds since its foundation, and continues to find expression in modern times.

If there is anything traditional about Penfolds, it is the practice of constantly reviewing the wines it already does well, and continuously evolving and refining styles as vineyards mature and access to ever older and more varied vineyard sites improves.

The 1994 Cabernet/Shiraz Bin 389, a blend of 54% Cabernet Sauvignon and 46% Shiraz, possesses a dense purple color, and a big, sweet nose of blackberries, earth, and a touch of asphalt and smoke. Full-bodied, with copious quantities of sweet, chewy fruit, this is a large-scaled, dense wine that can be drunk now or cellared for up to a decade. This winery continues to turn out an insipid selection of white wines, but the reds are all noteworthy, and some are reasonably good values.

Rating 88 - Robert Parker, Wine Advocate (FEB/1998)
