Wine Summary Image

At just over 20 years old the Sangreal vineyard is the oldest By Farr vineyard. Always the first vineyard to be harvested it typically produces prettier, more perfumed wines. Sangreal is consistently made with a higher percentage of whole bunch than the Farrside and aged in new French oak for a period of 18 months.

Expert Reviews

The vineyard was planted in ?94 to clones 114 and 115, believed to have mutated into a single 'Sangreal' clone. Always made with 50-70% whole bunches, and 60-70% new oak maturation for 18 months. Another very different iteration of pinot, the multifaceted bouquet with both red and black fruits in play, the same perfumed vehicle as Farr Rising, the palate of remarkable elegance and finesse, with exactly the right balance between pure pinot fruit flavours and structure ex the whole bunches. - Halliday Wine Companion

Winery Tasting Notes

Notes Image

Very deep dark red colour with some tinges of black around the edges and a dark red hue. Very perfumed the nose offers up enchanting aromas of violets, dark cherries and dark plum with a clove overlay followed by meaty and spicy cedar end notes. The palate shows more finesse and elegance than the Farrside not that it’s lacking anything in terms of richness or power, comparatively it’s a more savoury style. With all of the components sitting in perfect harmony the palate features a complex regime of flavours including dark cherries, subtle plum and a hint of sour cherries interlaced with a stalky clove like quality. Some smoky meat like characters, lightly toasted cedar and spice follow. Beautifully integrated tannins have excellent underlying structure. Finishes with a long savoury conclusion of spicy dark cherries, dark plum, subtle clove, smoky dried meats and spicy cedar.

Winery Profile

The area around Geelong in the mid 19th century was regarded as not only one of the pre-eminent wine regions of Australia, but showed enormous potential on the world stage, medalling at prestigious Parisian wine shows. This early promise was sadly obliterated by the vine louse, Phylloxera, which swept through Victoria in the 1880s, leaving the budding wine industry in ruins.

Bannockburn Winery continues in the footsteps of these producers of yesteryear. Established in 1974, it was one of the first of the boutique Australian wineries, and a trailblazer within Geelong. Bannockburn holds James Halliday's highest rating level for a winery, and receives praise from across the wine industry.

The entire range is strong, but of special note are the pinot noir, chardonnay and shiraz. All wines are made in an intelligent, minimalist style, utilising wild ferments, and benefit greatly from the immense integrity with which the vineyards are run. Great fruit, great winemaking, great wines.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★

Wines displaying a 5 star designation are recognised as being of proven quality provenance, our team has verified that the wine has been stored correctly from original purchase straight from the winery, documentation, where possible, has been sighted and cellaring conditions have been inspected. This wine generally comes from only the best and most respected of wine collectors in Australia.

★ ★ ★ ★

Wines displaying a 4 star designation have been cellared correctly as verified by the current owners. In general these wines have been purchased from retailers or traders and stored in cellared conditions from original purchase.

★ ★ ★

Wines displaying a 3 star designation are in good condition when we inspect and we are able to confirm some cellaring conditions but we are unable to verify all ownership and storage conditions of their history.

A wine displaying no stars doesn’t mean that there is a problem with the wine, it simply means that we have been unable to verify provenance, however a quality image is always available for the purchaser to make their own purchasing decisions.

Private Cellar wine is wine which has been stored for aging purposes in a Private Cellar.

Storing the wine and allowing it to age has the potential to improve the quality of the wine. While wine is perishable and capable of deteriorating, storing the wine can alter the aroma, colour, mouthfeel and taste of the wine in a way that may be more pleasing to the taster.
