Eileen Hardy was Hardy's family matriarch, an indomitable spirit and the first lady of Australian wine. Since taking over at the helm from her late husband Tom Mayfield Hardy, Eileen continued to build the Hardys brand and was recognised with an OBE for her outstanding contribution to the Australian wine industry.

Her unwavering dedication to the family led to her four children honouring her 80th birthday with a special vintage, which was served at her legendary open house birthday party. The wine was so well received by Eileen and her guests that supplies soon dwindled and an award winning icon was born.

Expert Reviews

This is one of those wines that just get better and better with breathing. It opens a rather subdued, cool customer, but slowly evolves a bouquet that's very complex and reminiscent of succulent black fruits, mint, smoky mocha and beef stock. Classy, spicy oak is seamlessly woven through it, and it tastes ripe with great depth and persistence. Fine-grained tannins support it harmoniously. Great with a roast fillet of beef.

Aroma

Concentrated aromas of blueberries, plums and currants are enhanced by subtle hints of mint and liquorice.

Palate

A full-bodied rich palate with intense blackberry and red currant flavours is given added complexity by intriguing game and spice characters. Great balance, ripe tannins and persistency of flavour are hallmarks of this distinguished wine.

Winery Profile

The inaugural 1970 Eileen Hardy Shiraz was released as a tribute to Eileen Hardy, a pioneer and matriarch to this inspirational family wine. Each vintage the winemakers select the very best parcels of Shiraz from regions throughout Australia to carry the ‘Eileen Hardy” label.

The 2004 vintage is sourced from premium McLaren Vale vineyards where vine age ranged from 45 to 105 years of age. Fruit was handpicked, de-stemmed and pressed via a traditional 86 year old basket press. Individual parcels of wine were racked to French oak barriques spending a total of 20 months in maturation prior to bottling.

This is a very opulent perfumed wine with gamey blackberry/liquorice intensity, well integrated new oak and fine pronounced tannins. This “living breathing beast” reflects a strong house winemaking ethos and exceptional vineyard resources.

The resultant flagship Shiraz is as exceptional as Eileen Hardy herself.
