Wine Summary Image

The inaugural 1970 Eileen Hardy Shiraz was released as a tribute to the matriarch of Australia's best known winemaking and sailing family. Eileen actively influenced the Hardy wine company 1938 - 1975, and was honoured with an OBE in 1977 for her outstanding contribution to the Australian wine industry.

In recognition of this great lady, each vintage the winemakers select the best Shiraz to carry the 'Eileen Hardy' label.

Expert Reviews

Dense and brooding when first released, it has already evolved into a highly sophisticated marriage of fruit and oak on bouquet and palate; the latter's excellent savoury tannin structure balances the lashings of opulent fruit.

Rating: 95, Drink By: 2013, Date Tasted: 16 Oct 2001, James Halliday

Winery Tasting Notes

Notes Image

This 1998 wine is a blend of McLaren Vale, Padthaway and Clare Valley fruit, crafted using the traditional winemaking techniques of open fermentation and basket pressing. Following fermentation, the wine was matured for 24 months in new and one year old French, oak barriques, and released after 36 months. On release, this wine showed fresh black cherry, blackberry and cracked black pepper aromas complemented by spice and herbal characters of rosemary, nutmeg and cloves. The palate has a lively and velvety mouthfeel showing complex powerful flavour similar to those on the nose, with hints of liquorice and sage. The rewarding finish has finely structured tannins and subtle toasty vanillin oak notes providing impressive structure to this wine. Careful cellaring for 7 to 10 years and decanting the wine prior to serving, is recommended.

Winery Profile

The inaugural 1970 Eileen Hardy Shiraz was released as a tribute to Eileen Hardy, a pioneer and matriarch to this inspirational family wine. Each vintage the winemakers select the very best parcels of Shiraz from regions throughout Australia to carry the ‘Eileen Hardy” label.

The 2004 vintage is sourced from premium McLaren Vale vineyards where vine age ranged from 45 to 105 years of age. Fruit was handpicked, de-stemmed and pressed via a traditional 86 year old basket press. Individual parcels of wine were racked to French oak barriques spending a total of 20 months in maturation prior to bottling.

This is a very opulent perfumed wine with gamey blackberry/liquorice intensity, well integrated new oak and fine pronounced tannins. This “living breathing beast” reflects a strong house winemaking ethos and exceptional vineyard resources.

The resultant flagship Shiraz is as exceptional as Eileen Hardy herself.
