Nepenthe Ithaca Chardonnay 2013 (6 x 750mL) Adelaide Hills, SA

Description:

The Vintage

Vintage 2013 experiencedbelow average rainfall throughout the growing period providing a very dry vintage and greatly reduced disease pressure resulting tin very clean fruit at harvest. Temperatures were slightly warmer than average during the flowering period resulting in excellent bunch development and even berry size. Crop levels were slightlyabove average on the whites and average on all reds resulting in very balanced canopies. Conditions during the ripening period were ideal with mild day time temperatures and cold nights, all conducive to excellent flavour development and the retention of natural acidity in the fruit. Harvest commenced in early February with fruit ripening being slower than the previous vintage allowing more time to coordinate harvest and allowedus to harvest all varieties attheir optimum maturity and flavour profile. Thecombination of moderate crop levels and mild conditions during the ripening period has resulted in some of the best quality fruit for a number of years.Murray Leake –Viticulturist

Winemaking

Fruit for the 2013Ithaca Chardonnay was sourced from the two vineyard blocks on our original estate vineyard at Lenswood as well as a vineyard near Echunga in the Southern Adelaide Hills. Fruit is handpicked in the early hours following sunrise and rapidly transported to the winery. It is then pressed very gently with the juice allowed to settle before racking to barrel. The wine is entirely fermented in French oak barrels at 15 –25 degrees with approximately 50% new barrels. The wine is aged for 9 monthson yeast lees in its original barrel, with regular stirring. Malolactic fermentation is not encouraged. Every barrel is then tasted and classified; those chosen are racked to tank, bentonite fined and clarified. The finished, racked blend may be further lightly fined to improve palate harmony. Alex Trescowthick –Winemaker

Expert Reviews

Gold & 95 Pts - Halliday Rating.

Barrel-fermented and matured on lees for 9 months in new and used French oak. Bright straw-green; this is a delicious wine in a riper, richer spectrum than many these days, its citrus-accented acidity giving the finish life and length. - 27 July 2015.

88 Points - Jeremy Oliver

Winery Profile

Brand Profile Image

In 1994, the Tweddell family purchased a premium property in the sub-region of Lenswood in the Adelaide Hills.  The property was carefully selected and planted to 24 hectares of vines with the intent of producing premium wine.  Proven varieties such as Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc were planted, as well as interesting varieties such as Zinfandel and Pinot Gris.  In 1996, Nepenthe received approval to build its winery, only the second in the Adelaide hills at the time (the first being Petaluma in 1978).

In the backdrop of the cool heights of the Adelaide Hills, we started producing some soul reposing potions of our own: uncompromising wines of outstanding quality and internationally recognised distinction. Wines that, strangely enough, have been impressing both critics and consumers with their varietal faithfulness and subtle Adelaide Hills nuances.

From the beginning, our wines have received positive review from the press and numerous medals on the show circuit. In the first few vintages, Nepenthe wines featured in James Halliday’s Top 100, The UK Times Top 100, The Advertiser Top 100, The International Wine Challenge as well as many other feature media articles.

The success of the wines is evident in the market place.  Currently,  Nepenthe sell nationally and our wines are exported to the United Kingdom, USA, Japan, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Canada, Switzerland, Holland, Sweden, Denmark and Croatia. In all these markets the press and public have warmly received Nepenthe wines.

Due to this demand, in 1997 Nepenthe acquired a property in Charleston within the Adelaide Hills and has planted a further 43 hectares of vineyard. Then in 2002 a 25 hectare vineyard was acquired in Balhannah (where our cellar door is located), and in 2005 Nepenthe acquired its latest vineyard, 38 hectares in Hahndorf, with room for further expansion.

Nepenthe also sources fruit from a variety of vineyards throughout the hills. Most fruit Nepenthe receives is managed by Nepenthe Viticulture, part of the Nepenthe Group. This company ensures that Nepenthe only receives the highest quality fruit, ensuring strict control of the grapes that make our award winning wines.
