Wine Summary Image

Piper is not only one of the world's favourite Champagnes, it's also one of the greatest value-for-money authentic Champagnes available. Created by eight time winner of 'Sparkling Winemaker of the Year' at the International Wine Challenge, Regis Camus, this is a crisp and elegant Champagne with a depth and complexity that belies the price.

Nose starts with tart green apple, hints of white peach and then apple fruit glazed danishes. The flavour then reduces into a soda apple spritz taste where cool melon and peach dominate with an unmistakable Meunier streak before leading onto a muted oak yeasty base. Chalk is present but subtle throughout from start to finish. A fresh green pinot grip takes over and dominates before finishing with dried green apricot.

Expert Reviews

Rated 92 points, Huon Hooke

Straw, hay and toasty, smoky, meringue-like aromas; flavours of pear, and apples both green and red. The finish is fine, dry and cleansing. A bright, lively wine, and you don't notice the 11 grams/litre dosage. The balance is good and it's an excellent aperitif or anytime style.

Rated 90 points, Campbell Mattinson

Crowd favourite of many. Made with mostly pinot noir from over 100 crus. Upfront flavour. Good mouthfeel. Rose petals, stewed strawberries, cracked wheat, brown bread. Doesn’t really flourish through the finish but shows a fair amount of personality on the palate. Just persistent enough. Has a creaminess. A core of grapefruit flavour motoring beneath. Volume of fruit/flavour but not sweet.

Winery Tasting Notes

Notes Image

This Champagne teases and allures us with its festive, light-drenched, pale gold shimmer and joyful display of neat, lively bubbles. Notes of almond and fresh hazelnut accompany the precise ascent of its bubbles. It is lively, subtle and light, leaving a deliciously incisive sensation of smoothness, marked by the pureness of fresh pear and apple and a delicate hint of citrus fruits. A harmonious mixture of bright, crunchy pomelo, blonde grapes and juicy white fruits creates the delightfully surprising sensation of lightness embraced by the structure and depth from the Pinot Noir; all beautifully balanced

Winery Profile

Florent-Louis Heidsieck founded this eponymous Champagne House in 1785. His wines gain immediate recognition and in May of the same year, he is said to have presented his already legendary wine to Queen Marie-Antoinette at Versailles.

In 2011, the House works with close to two hundred growers, spread out over the whole of the Champagne area. Regis Camus, winemaker, and his team, refer to a certain number of “House criteria”, established over time and enriched by their own experiences. They follow the evolution of the plant throughout the year and leading up to harvest. They select the grapes that have reached optimal maturity, in the parts they judge best and in a great number of different crus, to allow them to compose an original blend, rich in its nuances. Piper-Heidsieck vinifies the musts separately, varietal by varietal, cru by cru. This is the only way to preserve and respect the typicity of the origins.

The wines of Pipe- Heidsieck are radiant and crisp. Over the last 220 years, the spirit of the House had evolved without really changing.

The Piper-Heidsieck wines have charm and drive, but also structure and precision. They are easy to approach, in all earnestness, as they give a subtle impression of Sophisticated simplicity. And every time one tastes them, on-rediscovers that “small touch” in the flavours that seduces in a inimitable way.
